Timber surfaces must be clean, dry and free of also surface dirt, debris and loose material. The moisture content of the wood should not exceed 18% prior to coating.

  • Resinous deposits on bare timber, especially new wood, should be removed by wiping with methylated spirit
  • Knotting agents should not be used with Sadolin opaque systems
  • Suitable wood fillers may be used for making good any minor surface defects, imperfections or open joints
  • Some general or 'All Purpose' fillers may not be suitable
  • Only use non-ferrous fixings, screws and nails
  • Where there is a risk of extractive discolouration, especially when using white or pale colours on resinous / knotty softwoods and coloured hardwoods, an initial coat of a suitable blocking primer is recommended in order to minimise the risk of this type of discolouration

New or Bare Wood

  • Wipe over bare wood with a lint-free cloth dampened with methylated spirits to remove any natural oils and resin
  • Timber that has been exposed for 4 weeks or more will require sanding back to a clean, sound surface
  • Any non-treated timber should be treated with two liberal coats of Sadolin Quick Drying Wood Preserver, paying particular attention to end grains, allowing 24 hours drying time between coats, before overcoating with Sadolin Woodshield
  • Do not use Sadolin Woodshield on substrates which have had water-repellent preservative treatments applied
  • Where possible, the base coat should be applied all round prior to fixing

Previously Painted or Varnished Wood

Where there is localised damage, or deterioration has occurred as a result of exposure of the factory coating for longer than 3 months, affected areas should be thoroughly sanded back to a sound substrate and recoated

  • Previously painted and varnished surfaces in good condition should only need thorough sanding to aid with adhesion
  • Woodstained surfaces in good condition should only need to be washed down with warm water and detergent, allowing to dry before application
  • For surfaces in poor condition, remove any loose, flaking material and any grey, weathered timber by thoroughly sanding in the direction of the grain
  • Do not break through the surface coating
  • Ensure that all surface dust and debris from sanding is removed before coating

Glazing

  • The backs of new glazing beads, end grains and rebates should be finished with Sadolin Woodshield prior to fixing into place
  • Joinery to be coated with Sadolin opaque systems should be glazed using a suitable sealant
  • The use of linseed oil putty or modified, non-setting compounds are not recommended in conjunction with Sadolin products
  • To confirm suitability with the Sadolin range of products, please consult the manufacturer of the relevant glazing material
  • Silicone glazing materials should only be applied upon completion of the finishing coats

Applying Sadolin Woodshield Superior Flexible Paint

Always do a small test area before starting any project and follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Conditions

Sadolin Woodshield should not be applied if there is a risk of rain, or when air / substrate temperatures are below 8℃ or above 25℃, or if the relative humidity is above 80% during the application or drying period. Treated surfaces must be protected from frost and rain until fully dry. Failure to meet these requirements may adversely affect the drying, visual quality and durability of the finish.

Initial Procedure

Stir thoroughly before and during application to ensure consistent sheen and colour. Failure to do this may result in variations in the final finish.

Application

  1. Apply Sadolin Woodshield in a full flowing coat, ensuring all surfaces and end grains are fully coated
  2. For best results use a good quality synthetic bristle brush and try to avoid over brushing
  3. Always start with the edges, sides, top and bottom of window frames and doors
  4. To ensure optimum durability and uniformity of appearance, we recommend finishing with 2 full coats Sadolin Woodshield, allowing a minimum of 16-24 hours drying time between coats

Maintenance

A lightening in colour, reduction in sheen and a loss of water-repellency is an indication that maintenance is required. For general light maintenance, lightly abrade in the direction of the wood grain and clean using warm water and a mild detergent, then rinse thoroughly with clean water. Once dry, a fresh coat of Sadolin Woodshield Superior Flexible Paint may then be applied.

If the finish is badly flaking or peeling, to the point where the bare wood is showing through or has started to grey, please follow the full Preparation and Application instructions above.

Easy to use by C Goy

Used on exterior, small paned windows. Very easy to apply, quick drying, and easy to remove over-run paint on the glass. Brushes easy to clean too.

Good by Lara Cole

Well started to paint the windows after sanding them, no awaiting good weather to finish them. What I have managed seems to be a good quality finish, easy to apply and fairly quick drying.

Time will tell, but have now painted two garages and utility room and the end result is impressive - it has the feel of a quality product But its durability is to be tested but I am confident it will endure.

Excellent by Jay

It is easy to apply, covers well and the clean up is easy too. It is lasting longer than the oil based systems that I used previously. As someone who wants to spend as little time as possible on maintaining exterior woodwork, this product appears to tick all my boxes.

A top quality product for exterior woodwork by Graham Lloyd

I use this paint on a wide variety of external woodwork including window frames. I don't think anything comes near it for ease of application and durability. Yes, it looks expensive but there is a real saving in terms of preparation and lifetime. A great product.

My quick and durable go-to paint by Roy Banks

I've used the black and white versions over a number of years, but the black is my favourite. Makes painting my old wooden, multi-paned window frames easier and less frequent. No priming, no undercoat, no fumes, no white spirit. Give it a good stir - especially a new tin. I think it's great and no longer waste time considering other products. The limited colour range doesn't bother me - in fact it makes life simpler!

Pricey but good by David R

This product remains flexible which means less cracking and peeling . This in turn means less work and painting for me which makes the extra cost fully justified . Quick delivery from WFD and competitive pricing.

Bright white- looks smart by Tom Vaughan

Used as online said the same paint as Sadoline SuperDec however seems to need a couple more coats than the SuperDec. Still a good finish and time will tell on durability.

Love this paint. Goes on easily, covered bare wood quickly with just 2 coats. Like the fact it goes over other types of paint. Easy to clean off brushes. Definitely use again.

Very good - better than expected by David C

Used it for some wooden drain covers - harsh environment. Excellent paint to apply. Gives a nice shiny black finish. On 'treated' but bare wood had to use 2 coats plus a touch up in some places to get a uniform colour. Brushes on well, dries OK. Looks nice.
