Sadolin Classic Wood Protection absorbs deeply into the timber to provide exceptional protection against weathering. It is ideal as a base stain for other products in the Sadolin range including Sadolin Extra Durable Woodstain and Sadolin Extra Durable Clearcoat.

Timber surfaces must be suitably prepared, clean, sound and dry. The moisture content should not exceed 18% prior to coating.

Bare Timber

  • Degrease any exposed bare timber surface by wiping with a cloth dampened with methylated spirits to remove any surface impurities or resinous deposits
  • Knotting agents should not be used with Sadolin woodstain systems
  • Hardwoods such as Teak, Ipe, Meranti and Balau must be thoroughly de-greased with methylated spirits prior to applying Sadolin Classic Wood Protection, as they contain a lot of natural oils
  • Any minor surface defects, imperfections or open joints can be filled with a suitable wood filler prior to coating
  • Only use non - ferrous screws, nails and fixings

New Timber

  • Any timber that has not been previously treated with a wood preservative should be treated with two liberal coats of Sadolin Quick Drying Wood Preserver paying particular attention to end grains, allowing 24 hours drying time between coats, before overcoating with Sadolin Classic Woodstain
  • Where possible, the base coat should be applied to all surfaces of the wood prior to fixing in place
  • Please Note: If using this product on decking, be advised that it is only suitable for new decking or decking that has been completely stripped or sanded back to bare wood

Previously Stained Timber

  • Lightly abrade, in the direction of the grain, ensuring not to break through the surface coating, and removing any remaining sanding dust after
  • Where there is localised damage, or deterioration has occurred as a result of exposure of the factory coating for longer than 3 months, affected areas should be thoroughly sanded back to a sound substrate and recoated
  • If a coloured base stain is required in order to match the existing factory applied coating, use Sadolin Classic Wood Stain in the most appropriate colour before proceeding as described above

  • The backs of new glazing beads, end grains and rebates should be brought forward to a finish using the full Sadolin system prior to fixing
  • Joinery to be coated with Sadolin Woodstain systems should be glazed using a suitable sealant
  • The use of linseed oil putty or modified, non-setting compounds are not recommended in conjunction with the Sadolin wood protection systems
  • To confirm compatibility, please consult the manufacturer of the relevant glazing material
  • Silicone glazing materials should only be applied upon completion of the finishing coats

Applying Sadolin Classic Wood Protection

Always do a test area before starting any project to test product suitability, adhesion and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Do not apply if there is a risk of rain, or when air / substrate temperatures are below 8℃ or above 25℃, or if the relative humidity is above 80% during application or drying periods. Protect from frost and rain until dry. Failure to meet these requirements may adversely affect the drying, visual quality and durability of the finish.

Initial Procedure

Ensure that this product is thoroughly stirred before and during application, otherwise sheen and colour variations may be experienced. Sadolin Classic Wood Protection is ready to use from the tin and does not require thinning.

  1. For best results use a good quality, long-haired, soft bristle brush
  2. Apply in a full flowing coat, working well into joints and ensuring end grains or sawn timbers are coated to saturation
  3. After 5-10 minutes redistribute the coating by brushing evenly in the direction of the grain
  4. Avoid over spreading Sadolin Classic as this will reduce the long term durability and performance of the coating system
  5. To ensure optimum durability and uniformity of appearance, we recommend the use of an overall coat of Sadolin Classic Woodstain prior to finishing with 2 full coats of Sadolin Extra

A lightening in colour, reduction in sheen and a loss of water-repellency is an indication that maintenance is required. For general maintenance, lightly abrade in the direction of the wood grain and clean using warm water and a mild detergent, then rinse thoroughly with clean water. Once dry, a fresh coat of Sadolin Classic Wood Protection can be applied.

If the finish is badly flaking or peeling, to the point where the bare wood is showing through or has started to grey, please follow the full Preparation and Application instructions above.

Pricey but a really good product by Martin Rhodes

We were advised to use this to protect the new timber doors on our garage. It's expensive but very good results obtained. We were so impressed we subsequently bought some more to treat our front door.

Goes on like water, lasts forever by Philip R Saunders

Quality product that the previous owners of my house used from new and which I rub down and reapply every seven years or so. The mahogany window frames are now over 40 years old and still perfectly sound. No repairs, no rot, no worries.

Easy to apply, preserves and revives wood by Mrs Gwendoline M Jones

I have faith in this product, having used it since 1970's. I have used it on window frames, sheds, outside furniture and garden fixtures. It is easy to use, and wood soaks it up, It has a strong smell so outside is best place to use. I have revived indoor furniture by taking it outside to treat in fine weather. You need to cover floor as it drips regardless of how careful you are but the results are worth the effort. Choose your colour carefully it is a stain.
