Barrettine Premier Wood Preserver is ideal for most exterior wood care projects including sheds, fences, exterior windows and frames, doors, carports, shutters, wooden garden gates and more. This product can be used as a standalone treatment or as a base-coat for a protective exterior wood oil or decking oil.

Please Note: This formula may differ slightly in colour to pre-October 2016 version, therefore always try a test area first. Barrettine Premier Wood Preservative contains a small amount of wax so is therefore not compatible for use with water based paints, varnishes and stains. If looking to paint, stain or seal exterior wood with a water based product, ensure that the wood is treated with a wood preservative that is oil, wax and silicon free such as Barrettine Premier Universal Preservative.

Ensure that wooden surfaces to be treated with Barrettine Wood Preserver are clean, dry and free from surface dirt, debris and other surface contaminates.

New Bare Wood

  • If required, new bare timber can be cleaned and de-greased with white spirit prior to application of wood preserver

Previously Treated Wood

  • Any surface coatings such as paints, varnishes and stains must be fully removed back to clean, bare wood by sanding or using a suitable stripper / remover
  • Wood that has been oiled in the last year should be allowed to weather for at least one year or until the wood preservative is able to penetrate through to the timber

Old Untreated Wood

  • Wood that has become decayed should be removed and replaced
  • Cut out and burn all decayed wood at least 45cm beyond the area of damage
  • Brush down the wood with a stiff broom or brush to remove any ingrained surface dirt and debris
  • Traces of mould, algae or fungi must be removed with a stiff brush or scraper
  • Areas that have been affected by mould, algae or fungi should be treated with Barrettine Mould and Mildew Cleaner

Always do a test area before starting any project and follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times. Shake or stir well prior to and during application to ensure a consistent colour.

  1. Only apply in temperatures of between 10℃ and 30℃
  2. Apply wood preserver using a synthetic brush, roller or shed & fence spray system*
  3. For the best protection apply a minimum of 2 coats to rough / sawn and smooth timber
  4. Where possible, end grain should be dipped or given extra coats for additional protection
  5. Allow 12 hours drying time between coats

* Although the solvent content of this product can perish the washers and hoses of some spray systems, it can still be a time and cost effective way to treat large areas. We recommend that if using a spray system try to complete the project in one day. This said however, depending on the type and brand of sprayer, it may last longer than this.

Once dry and if desired, a suitable exterior wood oil can be applied. Always follow the manufaturer's instructions on the tin.

Wood treated with Barrettine Premier Wood Preserver can be easily maintained by applying a fresh maintenance coat on a yearly or 2 yearly basis as required.

Please Note: If this product is over-coated with a clear decking oil or other exterior wood oil, it will last for up to 5 years. This is only if the exterior wood oil or decking oil finish is re-applied and maintained on a regular basis as per the guidance on the relevant product.

Q. Is this all I need to protect my summer house?

This product is commonly used on its own on sheds and fences and other exterior items constructed of rough wood, however for a total treatment we recommend over-coating with Barrettine Log Cabin Treatment or Clear Barrettine Decking Oil for added water repellency and weather protection.

If protecting the natural colour of the wood is important, use the clear preservative then overcoat with Osmo UV Protection Oil Extra or Fiddes Exterior High Build Wood Oil.

Q. Can I use Barrettine Wood Preservative on a chicken shed and dog kennel?

Barrettine Wood Preservative is perfectly safe to use on any surface that comes into contact with animals when dry. This includes but is not limited to dog kennels, chicken sheds and houses, horse stables and more. It's important to remember that this wood preservation treatment should be over-coated with a suitable exterior wood oil or decking oil. Animals should only come into contact with the surface of the wood when both the wood preserver and oil have fully dried.

Really good stuff by Mrs J B Collinson

This is my third order of this stuff - it is excellent. Used on new sheds, old sheds, garden gates, fence panels etc. No waste either. Rain water just beads on it- can’t get in.

Good product, easy to use and goes a long way by Ray P

Used it a number of times before and found it easy to use and it lasts well. The colour is very stable in sunlight and doesn't fade much at all.On a still day when it's warm the fumes from a large shed can be a bit heady so best done when there is a slight breeze. I found pouring from a full tin to be a bit messy as the liquid is just like water.

Easy to apply, good coverage by 123

Used to treat a 2.5m long wood store of very absorbent softwood. Has given a nice finish and water beads off during rain. 5L Was enough to give 3x coats on the wood store, which is fine given how much pine soaks up oil. Mark, Bristol

Good product but too expensive by Roger Ponsford

I used a previous version of this product last year and wanted to repeat the treatment again but I thought the increase in price was extortionate. The next time I treat my deck I will seriously look round for a cheaper alternative.

A note from us...

Hello Mr Ponsford,

Thank you for offering us some feedback on this popular product. Due to regulation changes concerning certain ingredients with in this product and many other preservative have recently changed their formulas. Resulting in variances in colour and consistency. The price increase has been passed from the manufacturers as they have worked hard to maintain the effectiveness and good quality of the product.

It can be used over the old formula, although it is likely to give a slight colour difference than previous treatments. I would be happy to answer any further questions or 01303 213838.

Kind Regards Samantha.

Lovely finish, just want I wanted by Elaine Matthews

The product went on our new shed very well, I wanted a clear one to show off the natural finish and it did, it smells very strong but it does go off. We have put on two coats and will put another coat on in the Spring.

This more viscous preservative is easier to pour and applies with minimal drips by Brian Arthur Miller

One coat has waterproofed the wood surface so that rain beads and runs off rather than wetting the timber. I used it on a large cedar shingle roofed studio and summerhouse and am absolutely satisfied with the excellent result.

It's a bit early to say but when I put the wood preserver on it was quite thick which can only be a good thing. Up to now the rain sits on top - again a good sign so hope it keeps that up
