Sadolin Superdec provides a solution to most common issues associated with traditional paints. It can be applied to new and previously painted or stained surfaces, and is ideal for use where a complete change of colour is required or where the existing surface has become weathered and uneven in appearance.

This product is not suitable for decking.

Wooden surfaces to be treated with Sadolin Superdec Paint must be suitably prepared, clean, dry and free from all traces of surface dust and debris. The moisture content should not exceed 18% prior to coating.

  • Resinous deposits on bare timber, especially new wood, should be removed by wiping with methylated spirit
  • Knotting agents should not be used with Sadolin Opaque Wood Protection
  • Suitable wood fillers may be used for making good any minor surface defects, imperfections or open joints
  • Some general or 'All Purpose' fillers may not be suitable
  • Only use non-ferrous fixings, screws and nails
  • Where there is a risk of extractive discolouration, especially when using white or pale colours on resinous / knotty softwoods and coloured hardwoods, an initial coat of a suitable blocking primer is recommended in order to minimise the risk of this type of discolouration

New or Bare Wood

  • Timber that has been exposed for 4 weeks or more will require sanding back to a clean, sound surface
  • If the wood is oily or resinous, thoroughly degrease the timber surface with a suitable solvent, e.g. methylated spirits
  • If required, treat with Sadolin Quick Drying Wood Preserver before applying Superdec Opaque Wood Protection
  • Fill small holes with a suitable wood filler
  • Lightly abrade (sand), in the direction of the grain to a smooth surface, using a medium grade abrasive paper
  • Do not break through the existing surface coating
  • Thoroughly remove all wood dust
  • Where there is localised damage, or deterioration has occurred as a result of exposure of the factory coating for longer than 3 months, affected areas should be thoroughly sanded back to a sound substrate and recoated

Previously Painted or Varnished Wood

  • Previously painted and varnished surfaces in good condition should only need thorough sanding to aid with adhesion
  • Woodstained surfaces in good condition should only need to be washed down with warm water and detergent, allowing to dry before application
  • For surfaces in poor condition, remove any loose, flaking material with a scraper or abrasive paper, sanding in the direction of the grain
  • Remove any weathered timber, and sand the sound coating with abrasive paper to provide an adequate key
  • Remove any grease and wipe any resinous areas and knots using a lint-free cloth dampened with a suitable solvent, e.g. methylated spirits
  • Ensure that all surface dust and debris from sanding is removed before coating
  • Strip any surfaces in poor condition bare and treat as new wood
  • Please Note: Where there is localised damage, or deterioration has occurred as a result of exposure of the factory coating for longer than 3 months, affected areas should be thoroughly sanded back to a sound substrate and recoated

Glazing

  • The backs of new glazing beads, end grains and rebates should be brought to a finish with Sadolin Superdec Wood Protection prior to fixing
  • Joinery to be coated with Sadolin Superdec Opaque should be glazed using a suitable sealant
  • The use of linseed oil putty or modified, non-setting compounds are not recommended in conjunction with our wood protection systems
  • To confirm compatibility, please consult the manufacturer of the relevant glazing material
  • Silicone glazing materials should only be applied upon completion of the finishing coats

Applying Sadolin Superdec Paint

Always do a test area before starting any project to test product suitability, adhesion and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Conditions

Do not apply if there is a risk of rain, or when air / substrate temperatures are below 8℃ or above 25℃ or the relative humidity is above 80% during application or drying periods. Protect from frost and rain until dry. Failure to meet these requirements may adversely affect the drying, visual quality and durability of the final finish.

Initial Procedure

Ensure Sadolin Superdec Opaque Wood Protection is thoroughly stirred before and during application, otherwise sheen and colour variations may be experienced. Sadolin Superdec Paint is supplied ready for use. Do not thin.

Application

  1. Apply Sadolin Superdec in a full flowing coat, ensuring all surfaces and end grains are fully coated
  2. For best results, use a good quality brush specifically designed for use with water-borne products
  3. Pay special attention to end grain, tops and bottoms of doors, and undersides of window sills
  4. Allow 4 hours to dry

To ensure optimum durability and uniformity of appearance, once Sadolin Superdec has dried we recommend finishing with 2 full coats of Sadolin Woodshield, allowing a minimum of 16-24 hours drying time between coats. In some instances on new timber, or where a strong colour change is required, a third coat may be necessary.

Maintenance

A lightening in colour, reduction in sheen and a loss of water-repellency is an indication that maintenance is required. For general maintenance, lightly abrade in the direction of the wood grain and clean using warm water and a mild detergent, then rinse thoroughly with clean water. Once dry, a fresh coat of Sadolin Superdec Opaque Wood Protection can be applied.

If the finish is badly flaking or peeling, to the point where the bare wood is showing through or has started to grey, please follow the full Preparation and Application instructions above.

Good product spreads and covers well by Richard Hunt

I have used Superdec on a number occasions and find it is a good quality exterior paint which we have used on our barn conversion. As the finish is semi gloss (satin) it stays clean and expels water.

Quick drying quality non gloss wood finish, needs to be stirred well by Jane In Lancashire

Does the job brilliantly and can be mixed in a big range of colours including RAL. This means that you can colour match to other paints and finishes such as masonry paint.

Good paint, but by Newbie Window Painter

Bought this paint for some softwood new windows. Took 4 coats in the end to cover to properly and stop being streaky. Thankfully its water based its so easy to clean up between coats! Windows not installed yet so cannot comment on its durability, tin claims 8 years. Service from wood finishes direct was fantastic, next day delivery for free and tin properly packaged with no chance of spillage/damage.
