Overview

Back

Manns Premier UV Decking Oil can be used on all pre-treated, pressure treated and preservative impregnated decking timbers, and is also suitable for use on wooden sheds, fences and pergolas.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure decked areas to be oiled are clean, dry and free from surface dirt and debris.

New Softwood Decking

  1. For unprotected decking-boards exposed to moisture or where mould and mildew is present, treating the wood with a mould and mildew cleaner is recommended before oiling
  2. For the best protection, all new softwood decking should be treated with a suitable exterior wood preservative
  3. Where possible, preserve all sides and edges including end grain prior to installation
  4. Sweep the decking with a stiff brush or broom to remove all traces of surface dirt and debris before oiling

New Hardwood Decking

Hardwood decking usually requires a period of weathering to allow the surface grain to open up. This allows for better absorption of the decking oil. Check the decking manufacturer's guidance on how long decking should be left to weather before treating.

Old Decking Preparation

Manns UV Decking Oil cannot be used over decking that has been painted, varnished or treated with a coating type stain. Any old surface coatings must be fully removed to expose bare wood before the decking can be oiled.

  1. Ensure that all 'coating' type finishes have been fully removed by jet washing or with a dedicated decking stripper
  2. Old oil finishes should be cleaned thoroughly with a suitable decking cleaner
  3. For decking and other surfaces that are or have been affected by mould, algae or black patches, treat the wood with a mould and mildew cleaner prior to applying a wood preservative or decking oil
  4. For the best protection, apply an exterior wood preservative to protect against mould, algae, dry rot, woodworm and wood related diseases
  5. If possible, preserve all sides and edges, including end grain prior to installation
  6. Wood preservative should be allowed to dry for a minimum of 24 hours before applying Manns UV Decking Oil
  7. Sweep the decking with a stiff broom to remove all traces of surface dirt and debris before oiling

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish.

Please Note: Tin design may vary but formula and application process remains identical

  1. Stir the contents of the tin thoroughly before and periodically during use for a consistent finish
  2. Apply an even coat of Manns Premier UV Decking Oil with a Manns 147 Natural Decking Brush or the Woodleys Decking Applicator Pad to all surfaces and edges for optimum performance
  3. For the best results, apply to all sides of decking and other timber including sawn ends
  4. Allow up to 12 hours drying time between coats

Regular Cleaning

To preserve the look and performance of the oiled finish for longer, it is recommended that decked areas are swept with a stiff broom on a regular basis. This is to remove loose leaves, dirt and other organic matter that can settle on the deck and in the grooves.

Deep Cleaning

For deeper cleaning, to remove scuff marks, stains, grease or other contaminants, we recommend the use of a dedicated garden decking cleaner.

Maintenance

To restore decked areas that have become worn or tired looking, the decking can be refreshed and restored by applying a maintenance coat of Manns Premier UV Decking Oil. This should be done after the deck has been cleaned and in accordance with the 'application' instructions above.

Back
Can Manns Decking Oil be applied in January?

You must be very cautious starting any exterior project in wet and cold months. The moisture content of the timber will be high, and the low temperature won't allow the timber to dry out and the product to cure properly. We suggest waiting until we get some better weather. Ideally temperatures above 10°C (including overnight)

How dark is the Natural Oak, going on new pine decking?

The Natural Oak shade is somewhere in between the colours of Light Oak and Dark Oak. The overall colour you will achieve will always differ even when using the same wood species as each piece of wood has its own unique grain density and porosity. A test area will help you to assess the results before completing the project.

Can I wait a week before applying the second coat of Manns Oil?

It's not recommended to leave a long gap between coats, the waxes and resins will cure hard and will not accept the second coat very well leaving a less durable surface which wont last very long.

Can I use Manns Decking Oil to protect my garden furniture in Acacia wood?

This is a multi-purpose, solvent-based oil for all exterior softwood and hardwood. It will do a great job at protecting and enhancing the beauty of your garden furniture regardless of timber species as the Manns Premier UV Decking Oil is very versatile.

Can I use the Clear oil after a first coat of the Light Oak oil? I don't want to darken the wood any further.

Yes, these products are compatible and would help to give the timber just a slight tint of the Light Oak colour without it darkening too much.

Excellent - better than the waterbased
Having stripped my old decking back to bare wood, I pondered whether to use a water based or solvent based sealer. After reading reviews on loads of products, I settled on this. Best decision ever - its been great coverage and finish and been well tested by recent rain. Would highly recommend

Easy to apply, low smell and dries to a beautiful finish on hardwood
Product was recommended for balau hardwood due to being thinner, and is easier to apply. Has dried to a very nice looking finish after completing the 2 coats

Good product 2nd time I've used it
Used this for a 2nd time, the original still had retained good colouring, not faded.

The best decking oil
This -Manns- is the best decking oil...superb result. Tried Liberon, Ronseal, Barrettine and Cuprinol. Osmo is as good but much more expensive. Good finish that lasts; just watch the rain puddle and not soak in.

Excellent Option
Very easy to apply. Add a second coat anytime after 12 hours. Water beading extraordinary even after one coat. Clear option does give very slight yellowing effect but looks rich and consistent.
