Fiddes Hard Wax Oil Tints offers an extremely hard-wearing, oil-based wood stain finish that dries to a soft satin sheen. Perfect for most interior wooden surfaces, including floors, doors, skirting boards, furniture and more. Child and food safe when dry, this product is ideal for wooden chopping boards, utensils and children's toys.

Before opening the 5ml sample sachets, squeeze the packet several times to ensure that the oil and pigments inside are thoroughly mixed.

Ensure that wooden surfaces, especially floors, have been sanded and prepared with care. Poor preparation and / or sanding technique may result in a poor finish. Surfaces must be clean and dry, removing all traces of dust and dirt before application (maximum moisture content 20%). Only apply on frost-free surface. For guaranteed performance it is always recommended to remove all traces of a previous finish.

  • Existing oiled surfaces can be lightly rubbed back with meths then fully cleaned
  • Pre-existing varnishes and sealers must be completely removed via sanding or using a suitable paint or varnish remover
  • Fill in any holes or gaps in wooden floors with Fiddes Floor Repair Kit
  • To protect against mould and blue stain in moist surroundings, pre-treat with a suitable interior wood preservative

Always do a small test area before beginning any project to assess compatibility and suitability. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Fiddes Hard Wax Oil Tints is ready-to-use from the tin, do not thin. Stir thoroughly prior and periodically during application. Fiddes Hard Wax Oils dry via oxidation so it is important to ensure good ventilation during application and drying.

Application to Wood floors

The ideal application tool is a firm, fine, natural bristle brush, however the key to a great finish is thin application with removal of any surplus with a clean, lint free cloth.

  1. Apply first coat thinly and evenly along the wood grain
  2. Remove surplus and leave to dry (4 hours)
  3. Lightly de-nib surface, then vacuum clean
  4. Repeat above steps for second coat

Application to Cork floors

Cork tiles are best treated before fitting to avoid overlapping treatment of edges which would lead to prolonged drying times. A cork floor treated with Fiddes Hard Wax Oil Tints will get a robust, elastic and wear-resistant surface which will harden further over several weeks. Due to the extreme absorption power of this highly elastic, natural, material we recommend the following procedure:

  1. Apply first coat very thinly with a broad varnish scraper, or for smaller areas a natural bristle brush
  2. The Hard Wax Oil should immediately absorb into the surface
  3. Leave to dry for at least 24 hours
  4. Apply second coat, again very thinly
  5. Remove excess with cloth immediately
  6. Leave to dry for at least 24 hours

Fiddes Hard Wax Oil Tints can be intermixed to produce unique colours. For a more translucent finish add clear Hard Wax Oil. Here are some tips for achieving different effects:

  • For lighter a shaded finish: Apply a single coat of Hard Wax Oil Tints then finish with a clear coat of Fiddes Hard Wax Oil, or if you have used the white tint, use Fiddes Hard Wax Oil Natural to stop the white from yellowing
  • For increased colour depth: Apply two coats of Hard Wax Oil Tints
  • To change the sheen from a satin finish: Apply Matt or Gloss from the Clear Hard Wax Oil range to create the desired level

Regular Cleaning

For day to day cleaning, surfaces treated with Fiddes Hard Wax Oil Tints can be dry wiped, swept or vacuumed.

Deep Cleaning

To clean surface scuffs, marks and stains, use Fiddes Floor Surface Cleaner and a damp (not wet) microfibre cloth or mop.

Please Note: Although Fiddes Cleaner is named 'Floor Surface Cleaner' it can be used on any surface treated with Fiddes Hard Wax Oil, including floors, furniture, table tops and kitchen worktops.

Alternatively, Fiddes Wood Surface Cleaner Spray can be used on these other surfaces.

Oiled or waxed floors and surfaces should not be cleaned with a steam cleaner or steam mop as this can damage the finish.

Scuffs, stains, marks and minor scratches can be quickly and easily repaired.

  • Minor Blemishes can be removed by buffing with a cloth or brush as well as vacuuming
  • Light damage such as stains can be easily repaired by lightly sanding and re-applying a fresh coat of Hardwax Oil
  • Heavy damage including scratches can be easily 'repaired' by sanding the affected area, back to the bare wood if necessary and re-applying a fresh coat of the Hardwax Oil

Lovely limed-oak effect finish by Chrissie Hunter

Have used this before to blend a new oak block work top with an old limed oak kitchen Liked it so much we have ordered more to use on some oak bookcases to give a nice drift-wood effect. 2 coats are quite enough - a third starts to get too white and opaque.

Does exactly what is says by Joanna Masterson

Started off with a battered orangey old floor, but after a bit of elbow grease removing remains of old wax, I used this wax oil and am absolutely delighted! Looks superb. Easy to use dries quickly, couldn't be happier.

So Excellent by Mrs M Mackriell

We're renovating our 130 year old stone house. I am sanding each room as we go with my trusty random orbital sander - I don't want a factory perfect finish, I want to see a bit of history on those boards. The wood is pine; using Fiddes natural coloured hard wax oil on them set the latent orange tones on fire. It was a shock. So now I'm using the Onyx black - the result is an ashy dark brown with a few gold highlights. It looks brilliant. Fiddes Hardwax Oil is so easy to apply - I brush on to work it into the grain and the floorboard gaps then wipe it off. And it goes such a long way so is really economical. It will always be my floor finish of choice.

Superb quality! by Graeme Murray

Very hard wearing, high quality product. I used this to restore Douglas Fir floor boards, in a property that dates from 1745. Delighted with the results and would definitely recommend.

Gorgeous finish by Rachel

Used this to refinish an old oak wardrobe as the polyurethane varnish was peeling off. Never liked the plastic-y feel of the varnish so after some research this seemed like the right product, and I'm incredibly happy. Very pleasing to the touch and when applied with a non-abrasive white Scotch-Brite pad instead of a brush it's astoundingly economical. With 2 coats I ended up using a tiny fraction of the 1l tin. Eager to spruce up more furniture with it!

Character in a tin by Lesley Lintonbon

Just a small amount of this wax is needed to impart a beautiful, antique wood hue and character. It is, however, quite difficult to apply evenly; the first coat has turned out a bit patchy - a second coat is definitely required.

Too white by A Richards

Not a tint - really opaque white on second application and looked uneven- didn't look good.

A note from us...

Thank you for the feedback on the Sample sachet. With these sachets it is important to manipulate the sachet in your hands for a few minute to ensure the pigment is evenly dispersed through the oil, particularly with whites.

It is worth taking some time to try various test areas for a white finish as they can often be difficult to get right, when you do however they can look stunning and we do have a very helpful Blog on white finishes.

And if you have any questions please do not hesitate to get in touch with our friendly team on 01303 213 838.

All the Best Samantha.
