Fiddes Hard Wax Oil is a very versatile finishing oil, perfect for use on wooden floors, doors, kitchen surfaces, children's toys, skirting, furniture and unsealed tiles.
This product can be intermixed with the Fiddes Hard Wax Oil Tints range.
Ensure that surfaces to be treated are clean, dry and free from any previous finishes before applying Hard Wax Oil.
If required, sand the wood surface with 150 grade sandpaper or finer, then remove any residual dust.
Always do a small test area before beginning any project and follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times. No thinner or primer is required. Stir thoroughly before and during application.
Fiddes Hard Wax Oil can be applied directly from the tin onto a prepared surface with a good quality paint brush, cloth, microfibre roller or floor finish applicator. It is ideally applied in a well ventilated area at room temperature. For best results and maximum protection, we recommend 2 coats on hard woods such as oak, and 3 coats on soft woods such as pine but a test area needs to be done to ensure the wood can accept the 3rd coat.
For day to day cleaning, surfaces treated with Fiddes Hard Wax Oil can be dry wiped, swept or vacuumed. To clean surface scuffs, marks and stains, use Fiddes Floor Surface Cleaner and a damp (not wet) microfibre cloth or mop.
Please Note: Oiled or waxed floors and surfaces should not be cleaned with a steam cleaner or steam mop.
Scuffs, stains, marks and minor scratches can be quickly and easily repaired.
Q. Is the hard wax oil durable enough for a table top?
A. Absolutely, this product is perfect for any wooden items requiring good protection. Another big advantage of this product is that repairs are very easy to do, should the need arise.
Q. Is hard wax oil any different to linseed oil or Danish oil?
A. It's better because the wax content keeps the oil suspended in the surface of the wood for longer. This means that it's a more durable oil and that maintenance is required less frequently. Also 2-3 coats are recommended (2 for everywhere except table tops and high traffic areas) where as 3-5 coats are recommended for Linseed oil, Danish oil and Tung oil.
Q. I have an old oak floor that has been finely sanded. Is hard wax oil a good choice for it?
A. It is beneficial if the wood grain is open when applying this product because hard wax oil mainly sinks into the wood and becomes a part of the wood. For that reason it requires a fairly open grain to accept the oil and whilst being applied, it is necessary to work the product into the wood. If you want to use any oil on your floor, but especially a wax oil, it is recommended to sand the floor with a 150 grit sandpaper or coarser. Then this product will be ideal for you.
Q. Can i use a steam cleaner or steam mop to clean my oiled floor?
A. In short, "No". Oiled and waxed finishes on floors are 'Micro-porous' which means that although the wood is protected, it can still breath as it is not completely sealed as it would be with a varnish.
Cleaning oiled or waxed floors with a steam cleaner or steam mop introduces high temperature and pressure water which can strip and penetrate the oiled or waxed finish and potentially damage the wooden floor.
This product has been applied to hardwood oak stair treads in a commercial environment. It was easy to apply and looks great. It gives the wood a wet look but with a matt finish and brings the wood to life.
Easy to apply looks a great product. Some terebine driers added will dry it a bit faster and we found it necessary.
A great finish which is excellent on old oak floorboards. A slight sheen and the grain of the wood bought up perfectly. Looks lovely.
The hard wax oil is great stuff..totally transforms the wood..
Easy to apply. Super looking finish and very dutable
Tested this finish but chose semi gloss instead
The hard wax oil is easy to apply and gives a really good finish. It was used on a 200 year old pitch pine floor which did darken in colour but looks really good. Have used the product before on an oak staircase and it seems to be hardwearing so hopefully it will be on the pine floor too.
This was an excellent product, easy to use and gave a good finish.
Went on easily, seems to be good quality. Still slightly soft in the morning on raw sanded oak, so now we stir a few drops of terebine driers to a jar we pour into to use and that speeds up the drying. This is not a bad thing because not having too much in the first place is likely to extend the shelf life.
Bought a sample of this to compare against osmosis polyx. Very easy to apply. Used 2 coats on pitch pine blocks. Dries to a lovely smooth, even, semi Matt finish. This will be my choice of finish from the 2 I tested.
Well pleased with the easy application and finish of the product. I have several floors to do and shall be returning to Fiddes for more in due course.
Applied it as instructed. Gives a wonderful finish. Especially liked the reasonably quick drying time to enable us to get on second coats and then continue with the rest of the restoration. Buy it and you'll no doubt be pleased as was I
Excellent product, very easy to apply. Brought old, dry, elm floorboards into rich lustre renewal. Lovely finish. Product went a long way, too. Thought when I saw the tin there wouldn't be enough, but there was plenty. Would thoroughly recommend.
I was going to purchase an ordinary yacht varnish to seal my new wooden floor but was talked into purchasing what I thought was an over expensive equivalent. What a good decision that was! its easy to apply, gives a fabulous finish, and although it has only been down 8 weeks has show itself to be very resilient to scratches and marking. I will never use ordinary varnishes again.
I used this over van dyck crystals to seal our oak kitchen worktops. The two together look great and after a few weeks of use there are no issues with the seal. I will definitely use this product again.
Dries faster than rivals Which is very useful when you need to get a piece out ofthe workshop
Watched the online video from wood finishes direct. Very helpful. No problems with application. We used on pine flooring and delighted with results.
brillant product first class service from wood direct will be using again soon
I bought this Wax Oil to give my newly bought stairs and fire surround a much needed quality finish. I could not be more pleased with the finish, easy to apply and results are top class highlighting the grain perfectly and giving a much desired sheen that gives the rquired depth and warmth I was looking for. PERFECTION.
Would recommend this to anyone wanting a durable but natural looking finish for their floor.
