Osmo Natural Oil Woodstain is perfect for all exterior woods, including doors, windows & windowsills, carports, timber cladding, balcony, wooden decking, screens & smooth fences, pergolas, summer houses and garden furniture.

  • All colour shades can be mixed with each other to create any number of alternative colours
  • We can mix to a specific RAL shade. Use this RAL chart and input reference under "Special Instructions" at checkout and allow up to 20 working days for delivery. RAL matched colours are made to order and are therefore non-refundable

Osmo have advised that they are not able to colour mix the following RAL colours...

RAL 1026, RAL 1035, RAL 1036, RAL 2005, RAL 2007, RAL 2013, RAL 3024, RAL 3026, RAL 3032, RAL 3033, RAL 4011, RAL 4012, RAL 5025, RAL 5026, RAL 6035, RAL 6036, RAL 6038, RAL 7048, RAL 8029, RAL 9003 RAL 9006, RAL 9007, RAL 9022, RAL 9023.

Please be advised that 125ml tins are printed in German only. For application instructions refer to the overview below.

Before opening the 5ml sample sachets, squeeze the packet several times to ensure that the oil and pigments inside are thoroughly mixed.

Please Note: Using this product on rough sawn or featherboard wood will significantly reduce it's coverage.

Natural Oil Woodstain (701) Clear offers no UV protection and is therefore not recommended for wooden surfaces exposed to strong sunlight.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure surfaces to be treated with Osmo Woodstain are clean, dry and frost-free prior to application (moisture content max. 20°C).

  • Existing oil finishes should be lightly sanded and cleaned before application
  • Existing coatings such as paint and varnish must be fully removed by sanding or stripping back to bare wood
  • Remove sanding dust thoroughly from the surface with a brush or vacuum cleaner before application
  • Use white spirit to degrease and remove surface contaminates if required
  • Any traces of green growth or mould should be treated and removed with Barrettine Mould and Mildew Cleaner
  • Fill any holes or gaps with a suitable wood filler
  • Revive any greyed or sun damaged wood with Osmo Wood Reviver Gel
  • Any end grain can be sealed with Osmo End Grain Sealing Wax
  • If additional protection against blue stain, rot and insects is desired, pre-treat the wood, if possible on all sides, with Osmo WR Base Coat

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times. Stir thoroughly before and periodically during application.

  1. Apply Osmo wood stain thinly and evenly along the wood grain with an Osmo Soft Tip Brush or Osmo Premium Microfibre Roller and spread well
  2. Work the oil into the surface grain of the wood
  3. If possible, apply the first coat to all sides of the wood before installation to offer the best all-round protection
  4. Wipe off any excess oil from the surface of the wood with a clean, lint-free cloth
  5. Allow the first coat to dry for 4-6 hours
  6. Apply a second coat using the same method as the first

Please Note: Rough sawn timber is more absorbent, meaning coverage per litre will be greatly reduced.

Finishing

Finishing

Back

The dried surface is initially satin-gloss at first and is afterwards satin. The transparent colour tone of the finish will be influenced by the wood's natural colour, causing the result to deviate from the colour shown on the colour chart. Lightly pigmented (coloured) transparent finishes have little protection against UV influences and are therefore not recommended for surfaces prone to strong sunlight.

  • To increase the durability of the finish, we recommend applying a top coat of Osmo UV Protection Oil Extra (420)
  • For the white Osmo Natural Oil Woodstain finish (product code 900), use Osmo UV Protection Oil Extra (429) as a top coat as this will retain the white finish. Using the standard clear UV protection oil (420) on top of the white 900 may result in a creamy or 'off-white' finish

Maintenance

If surfaces show signs of wear or a loss of weather resistance over time, simply clean and add a maintenance coat of Osmo Natural Oil Woodstain to the existing finish.

Does the Natural Oil Stain contain UV filters?

The coloured options of the Osmo Natural Oil Woodstain do offer UV protection as the pigments act as a barrier, preventing the greying effects of the sun. As the 701 Clear Matt doesn't contain pigments, it offers no UV protection.

Can Osmo Woodstain be applied to Thermowood and TMT cladding?

Thermowood and Thermally Modified Timber (TMT) is prone to grey very fast and therefore application is recommended within the first two weeks after processing. Decking-Oil 010 Thermowood is optically suitable and recommended specifically for this timber

Can this product be used on shou sugi ban?

The levels of burn with shou sugi ban vary, if it's the tiger effect (not so scorched) we would recommend this product. If it's the alligator effect its likely to brittle to be oiled, we would recommend a varnish to seal it in. Give our Woodcare Experts a call on 01303 213838 to discuss your options.

Can I get the 700 Pine in a matt finish?

You certainly can. Take a look at Osmo Natural Oil Woodstain - Matt for the matt version of this product.

What is the area of coverage of Osmo 732 Satin from a 0.75 li tin of product?

As this product can achieve up to 26m² per litre, you will get roughly 10.5 m² from a 750ml tin, depending on the porosity of the timber.

Sample more opaque than tinned product
I was happy with the fairly transparent finish of the sample so purchased 0.75ml tin. Unfortunately the paint in the tin was more opaque, not sure why. I have ended up lightly sanding the finished structure to gain the more translucent effect, now unsure how weatherproof it is . I need to paint over with clear but this would mean even more cost.

Long Lasting
This is the third can that I have bought. It probably won't be the last! It is much more durable than other similar products. It takes a while to dry, but is worth it because it will be several years before the timber needs treating again.
