Decked areas to be treated should be clean, dry and free from traces of dust, dirt, oil, grease, wax and silicone.

New Decking Preparation

For all bare wood decking including tantalised, pressure treated and preservative impregnated decking timbers.

New softwood decking

  1. Treat with wax, oil and silicon free wood preservative for the best protection
  2. If possible, preserve all sides including end grain prior to installation
  3. Sweep the decking with a stiff broom to remove all traces of surface dirt and debris
  4. Use a suitable decking cleaner if required before staining

New hardwood decking

Hardwood decking usually requires a period of weathering to allow some of the natural oils in the wood to dissipate. This allows for better adhesion of the decking stain. Check the decking manufacturer's guidance on how long decking should be left to weather before treating.

Old Decking Preparation

Old coating type finishes such as decking paints, varnishes and varnish type stains must be fully removed back to bare wood before staining. Depending on the condition and type of finish, it may require more than one attempt to fully remove the old coating.

  1. Ensure that all 'coating' type finishes have been fully removed to expose bare wood by either jet washing or using a dedicated decking stripper and remover
  2. For decking affected by mould, algae or moss, or to restore the colour of decking that has turned grey or silver over time, use a decking restorer or reviver gel
  3. Treat with wax, oil and silicon free wood preservative for the best protection
  4. Where possible, preserve all sides including end grain prior to installation
  5. Sweep the decking with a stiff broom to remove all traces of surface dirt and debris before staining

Always do a test area before starting any project to check suitability and compatibility. Do not apply Ronseal Ultimate Decking Protection Stain in wet conditions or if rain, frost or snow is likely before the product is dry. Decked areas should be completely dry before applying Ronseal stain. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

All white and grey products contain titanium zinc which is heavier than the other ingredients in this product. Because of this, it tends to sink to the bottom of the tin and requires a prolonged period of stirring to ensure that it is blended back in with the other ingredients. It is therefore vital that this product is stirred for several minutes, prior and periodically during application, to ensure that any concentrations or titanium zinc sediment at the bottom of the tin are thoroughly intermixed. Failure to stir before and during application may result in an inconsistent colour or finish.

  1. Stir the tin thoroughly before and periodically during application
  2. Apply a thin, even film of decking stain with a suitable decking applicator
  3. Work the stain in the direction of the wood grain
  4. Work along the length of 2 or 3 boards at a time
  5. Allow the first coat to dry inline with environmental conditions
  6. Apply a second coat as above
  7. Allow 24 hours to dry completely before heavy use

Two coats of Ronseal Decking Stain are usually sufficient but this may vary depending on the type of decking timber and its absorbency.

Regular Cleaning

To preserve the look and performance of the decking stain for longer, it is recommended that decked areas are swept with a stiff broom on a regular basis. This is to remove loose leaves, dirt and other organic matter that can settle on the deck and in the grooves, which can degrade or damage the finish and decking timbers over time.

If signs of mould or algae appear, use an appropriate mould an mildew cleaner or fungicidal wash. The condition of wooden decking should be inspected on a regular basis and treated as required.

Deep Cleaning

Scuff marks, stains, grease and other surface contaminates can normally be cleaned with a decking cleaner.

Subtle stain which is easy to apply but needs 2 - 3 coats by David Strong

I have used this for the majority of the deck area referred to above. The colour is subtle and it does take several coats before the impact is clear - it is more of a stain than the Cuprinol. Seems hard wearing and does not show dirty footmarks.

GOLDEN DECKING August 2016 by Mrs Cowlin

We bought this Decking Stain from Wood Finishes Direct. We had really good service! This is the first time we have purchased this Company and product. We gave the decking - 45ft by 13ft - two coats of Pine. It looks Amazing! It is very golden to look at and everyone has said that my Husband has built a stage. We are so proud of what he made to replace the old and the Pine sets it off beautifully. It would make a good advertisement for Pine Decking Stain. So thank you Wood Finishes Direct.
