Dulux Trade Quick Dry Wood Primer Undercoat is a water-based, high opacity, dual purpose primer undercoat for interior and exterior woodwork. It is ideal for use as a primer for softwoods, hardwoods, chipboard and fibre board (except fire retardant-treated types). Can also be used as an undercoat for woodwork that has been previously primed or painted with either solvent or water-based paint.

For the best results, ensure surfaces to be varnished are sound, clean, dry (new surfaces particularly must be fully dry) and free from all defective or poorly adhering material such as dirt, grease or wax before treating. Take precautions during surface preparation of pre-1960s painted surfaces over wood and metal as they may contain harmful lead.

Previously varnished surfaces

  1. Clean off any wax polish, grease or finger marks with white spirit or a dedicated wax and polish remover
  2. Remove all defective or poorly adhering varnish
  3. Rub down thoroughly along the grain of the wood to provide a 'key'
  4. Use 'wet' methods where possible
  5. Wipe off with a damp, lint free cloth

New and bare wood surfaces

  1. New or bare surfaces must be rubbed down with a suitable grade of abrasive paper
  2. Wipe off freshly sanded wood with a damp, lint free cloth
  3. Clean and degrease the surface by wiping over with white spirit if required
  4. Treat any knots in wood with an appropriate knotting solution
  5. Any surface defects should be filled with an appropriate Wood Filler

Always do a test area before starting any project to check suitability and compatibility. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

New or bare wood surfaces

  1. Stir thoroughly before use
  2. Can be applied with brush, roller and airless or conventional spray systems
  3. Apply 2 coats allowing 2 to 4 hours between coats
  4. Only apply in temperatures above 10℃

Previously painted surfaces

  1. Stir thoroughly before use
  2. Apply with a brush, roller, airless or conventional spray system
  3. Apply 1 even coat to the wood
  4. Only apply in temperatures above 10℃

Do not use when temperatures are or predicted to fall below 10℃, or outside when there is a likelihood of rain.

Thinning

  • Sealing new or bare surfaces: Add up to 1 part clean water to 5 parts paint.
  • Normal use (not to be exceeded): Add up to 1 part clean water to 10 parts paint.
  • Conventional spray application: Add up to 1 part clean water to 2.5 parts paint.
  • Airless spray application: Add up to 1 part clean water to 5 parts paint.

Spray Recommendations

  • Conventional Spray: Satisfactory through most equipment.
  • Airless Spray: A typical set up for airless spray application would be a minimum working pressure on paint of 133 bars (2000 lb/sq in) with a spray tip size of 0.43mm (17 thou) and a spray tip angle of 60 degrees.

This product is designed as a primer, undercoat for paints in the Dulux Trade range so should therefore be over-coated with a suitable top coat.
