Dulux Trade Quick Dry Wood Primer Undercoat is a water-based wood primer and undercoat, ideal for use on softwoods, hardwoods, chipboard and fibre board (except fire retardant-treated types). It can also be used for undercoating woodwork that has been previously primed or painted with either solvent or water-based paint.

For the best results, ensure surfaces to be varnished are clean, dry (new surfaces particularly must be fully dry) and free of dirt, grease or wax before treating. Take extra care during surface preparation of pre-1960s painted surfaces as they may contain harmful lead.

Previously varnished surfaces

  1. Clean off any wax polish, grease or finger marks with white spirit or a dedicated wax and polish remover
  2. Remove all defective or poorly adhering varnish
  3. Rub down thoroughly along the grain of the wood to provide a 'key'
  4. Use 'wet' methods where possible
  5. Wipe off with a damp, lint-free cloth

New and bare wood surfaces

  1. New or bare surfaces must be rubbed down with a suitable grade of abrasive paper
  2. Wipe off freshly sanded wood with a damp, lint-free cloth
  3. Clean and de-grease the surface by wiping over with white spirit if required
  4. Treat any knots in wood with an appropriate knotting solution
  5. Any surface defects should be filled with an appropriate wood filler

Always do a test area before starting any project to check suitability and compatibility of the finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times. Only apply in temperatures above 10℃ and when rain is not expected.

  1. Stir thoroughly before use
  2. Dulux Trade Undercoat can be applied with brush, roller and airless or conventional spray systems
  3. Apply 2 coats allowing 2 to 4 hours between coats
  4. For previously painted surfaces, just apply 1 even coat and allow to fully dry

Thinning

  • Sealing new or bare surfaces: Add up to 1 part clean water to 5 parts paint.
  • Normal use (not to be exceeded): Add up to 1 part clean water to 10 parts paint.
  • Conventional spray application: Add up to 1 part clean water to 2.5 parts paint.
  • Airless spray application: Add up to 1 part clean water to 5 parts paint.

Spray Recommendations

  • Conventional Spray: Satisfactory through most equipment.
  • Airless Spray: A typical set up for airless spray application would be a minimum working pressure on paint of 133 bars (2000 lb/sq in) with a spray tip size of 0.43mm (17 thou) and a spray tip angle of 60 degrees.

Dulux Primer and Undercoat can be overcoated with paints in the Dulux Trade range.
