Cuprinol UV Guard Decking Oil was formally branded as Cuprinol Decking Oil and Protector.

Looking for a bigger range of colours with anti-slip decking properties? Consider Cuprinol Anti-Slip Decking Stain

Ensure the wooden decking to be treated is clean, dry and free from any previous coating, algae or mould.

New Decking Preparation

For all bare wood decking including tantalised, pressure treated and preservative impregnated decking timbers.

New softwood decking

  1. For best protection, treat with Cuprinol Wood Preserver Clear (BP) prior to application of UV Guard Decking Oil
  2. If possible, preserve all sides including end grain prior to installation
  3. Sweep the decking with a stiff brush or broom to remove all surface contaminates such as dirt, grit and organic matter
  4. Use Cuprinol Decking Cleaner to thoroughly clean the deck if required

New hardwood decking

Hardwood decking usually requires a period of weathering to allow the surface grain to open up, which allows for better absorption of the decking oil. Check the decking manufacturer's guidance on how long decking should be left to weather before treating.

Old Decking Preparation

Old coating type finishes such as decking paints, varnishes and varnish type stains must be fully removed back to bare wood before oiling. Depending on the condition and type of finish, it may require more than one attempt to fully remove the old coating.

  1. Ensure that all 'coating' type finishes have been fully removed to expose bare wood by either jet washing or using Cuprinol Stain Stripper
  2. For decking affected by mould, algae or moss, or to restore the colour of decking that has greyed over time, use a decking restorer or reviver gel
  3. For the best protection, treat with a suitable exterior wood preservative
  4. If possible, preserve all sides including end grain prior to installation
  5. Sweep the decking with a stiff broom to remove all traces of surface dirt and debris before oiling

Always do a test area before starting any project to test product performance and results. Follow the manufacturers instructions on the tin at all times.

  1. Stir the oil thoroughly before and periodically during application to ensure a consistent finish.
  2. Brush the oil on evenly along the grain
  3. Do not allow puddles to form and wipe off any excess oil with a clean, lint free cloth
  4. Allow to dry for 4 to 6 hours
  5. Apply a second coat as above

Spray application

This product can be spray applied using the Cuprinol Fence Sprayer or Cuprinol Power Sprayer. Refer to the sprayer user guide for full instructions.

  1. Cover any surfaces nearby to protect from overspray
  2. Any overspray should be cleaned up immediately (whilst still wet) with water and household detergent
  3. Do not apply in temperatures below 5℃, in damp conditions or if rain is likely before product has dried
  4. Take care to avoid over application, remove any excess oil with a clean, lint free cloth

To maintain the surface finish and its protective properties, re-apply a fresh coat of UV Guard Decking Oil following the Preparation and Application instructions as required.

Q. Is Cuprinol Decking Oil solvent based?

A. No. Cuprinol UV Guard Decking Oil is a water based decking treatment which means that it is low odour and easy to use. If you specifically require a solvent based product, consider Cuprinol Anti-Slip Decking Stain which is available in both 2.5Ltr and 5Ltr sizes and a range of attractive colours.

Q. Is this decking oil available in clear?

A. Yes. Cuprinol call the clear version of this product 'natural'. The clear or 'natural' version of this product does not contain any added pigment or colour and will simply enhance the natural colour and grain of your decking.

Great products great service by Michael Brewer

I have used this company a number of times never been disappointed items sent out quickly normally 3 days from order to your door the only time I order something and when I tried it the colour was not really what I wanted had a little trouble returning as a lot of couriers will not take if you say returning oil product but after speaking to wood finishes direct they suggested just saying wood product manage to return unwanted item would be nice if they had a return policy

Excellent product, easy to use & especially easy to clean brushes afterwards by Allison

I have used a different brand of decking oil in the past but since using Cuprinol Decking Oil I will not use any other now, the oil it's self has a low odour content and is milky in colour when applying which worried me at first but once applied you could see where you were putting it on - brilliant ... Fantastic finish too. Would definitely recommend.
