If you’re tackling a paint-stripping project for the first time, choosing the right product can feel daunting. That’s why we’ve put together a beginner’s guide to help you start using PeelAway with confidence.
Start With The Peelaway Test Pack
For first-time users, we always recommend beginning with the PeelAway sample twin pack. It includes everything you need to test both PeelAway products and determine which one is best suited to your specific project before committing to a larger quantity.
As a general rule:
- PeelAway 1 is ideal for older surfaces with thick layers of paint, especially where lead paint may be present.
- PeelAway 7 works best on more modern oil and water-based paints.
To demonstrate the difference, we tested both products on a painted wooden door, starting with a small test area for each.
Application Tips
PeelAway can be applied using either the supplied spatula or a brush. Whichever method you choose, make sure to prepare properly – this is powerful stuff.
- Protect surrounding areas such as floors and walls
- Wear gloves and old clothing
- Work carefully and methodically
The thickness of the coating will depend on how many layers of paint you’re removing, but around 3–4mm is ideal for most jobs.
Once applied, cut a piece of the correct PeelAway sheeting to size and press it firmly over the coated area, smoothing out any air bubbles.
You’ll notice that PeelAway 7 has a thicker consistency, making it particularly well suited to spatula application. Apply the sheeting in the same way as before.
Waiting For Results
After around three hours, the PeelAway was still quite wet and hadn’t fully completed its work. Patience is key with paint removal.
After 24 hours, however, the results were far more satisfying. The old paint had bonded to the sheeting, allowing it to be easily scraped away and revealing the surface beneath with minimal effort.
What Did We Choose?
In part two of this series, we’ll reveal whether PeelAway No.1 or PeelAway 7 was the best choice for the rest of the door — and show you the final result.
