Why Oil Your Wooden Worktop?
Top oils do more than enhance the natural beauty of wood – they also protect it from everyday moisture, spills, food stains, and wear. Unlike varnishes, oils soak into the timber, creating a breathable finish that’s easy to maintain and refresh over time. With the right product and technique, an oiled worktop can last for years while keeping its warm, natural character.

Step-by-Step: How to Apply Oil to a Wooden Worktop
1: Clean the surface
Remove crumbs, grease, and dust. The cleaner the surface, the more evenly the oil will absorb.
2: Lightly sand the worktop
Use Woodleys Sandpaper Sheets to smooth the surface and remove any minor blemishes or rough patches.
3: Wipe away sanding dust
A microfibre cloth works best – remove every trace of dust to avoid a gritty finish.
4: Stir your oil thoroughly
Use the Mako Paint Stirrer to ensure the ingredients are properly mixed. This ensures consistent sheen and protection.
5: Apply the oil thinly and evenly
Working with the ProDec Bristle Blend Brush, follow the direction of the grain. Thin coats absorb better and dry faster.
6: Wipe off excess oil
After a few minutes, use a clean microfibre cloth to remove any surplus. This prevents sticky patches or uneven sheen.
7: Leave to dry for 4 hours
Allow the worktop to rest so the first coat can fully soak in.
8: Lightly sand again
Use the Woodleys Finishing Pad to smooth the surface between coats. This helps the second coat bond beautifully.
9: Apply the second coat
Repeat the same thin, even application, then leave your worktop to fully dry. Once cured, it will be beautifully enriched and well protected. Watch the video above to see how Manns Premier Top Oil copes with the ultimate spillage!
