100% pure Tung nut oil is made from the pressed seed of the Chinese Tung Tree and gives a superior finish to that of linseed oil which tends to darken with age. Normally produced in China, it has a smooth clean finish that forms a thin film on furniture and other wooden surfaces to provide a water resistant barrier when 3-5 coats have been applied.
Known for it's elastic properties, Tung oil finish is able to move and flex as wooden surfaces and furniture expand and contract with changing temperatures.
Being very easy to work with and maintain, pure Chinese tung oil is both safe and versatile and can be used on almost any surface including, food preparation areas, floorboards, furniture, children's play areas, childrens toys and much more making Tung nut oil the perfect choice for the DIY enthusiast.
The key to success in any project is preparation; this also applies to the application of Tung oil to furniture, floors or other wooden surfaces. For new wood, it is recommended that any dirt and grease is removed from the surface with a good quality White Spirit or other form of de-greasing agent. For older wood, any areas of wear should be lightly sanded to a smooth finish then cleaned to remove any dust or debris; the prepared surface will then be ready for a fresh coating of the Tung oil.
For new wood, the first 2 coats of the Tung oil finish should be applied thinly as this helps to form a better base coat, the third and subsequent coats can be applied more heavily. Around 3-5 coats should be used on internal wooden surfaces and at least 5 coats should be used on external wooden surfaces. Tung oil naturally has a matt finish but a slight sheen can be obtained if the final Tung oil finish is buffed with fine grade wire wool (between 00 and 0000 grade).
Tung oil finish is best applied with a rag or good quality brush. The first few coats of the Tung oil stain should be allowed to penetrate fully before adding further coats. Tung oil is easy to apply with a soft cloth, such as t-shirt material. Work the oil in to the wood in a circular motion and finishing off in the direction of the wood grain.
Tung oil can be slow drying and waiting times depend on the coverage and the environmental conditions. It is possible to thin Tung oil, if necessary with white spirit. A thick coat will dry within 3 days and a thin coat will dry in around 12 - 24 hours.
Tung oil finish is very easy to maintain and repair. Most knocks, minor damages and stains from spillages such as wine can be removed by gently sanding the affected area and re-applying more Tung oil, this will blend in with the original finish to produce an almost invisible repair.
As with most wood finishing oils, waxes and stains, care should be taken with the storage of Tung nut oil. To prolong the life and retain the properties of the Tung oil finish it should be stored in a tightly sealed container somewhere that is both cool and dry.
Having read reviews the oil was as I expected and very good. I've used it on external wood in the garden and it's brought out the natural colour of the wood and provides a very water resistant finish. I will be applying further coats as I go through the spring/summer. Recommend diluting the first coat as the oil is quite thick.
It's Tung oil. And a very good quality. I have just used it to polish up a birch plywood cabinet I installed for a client. It was easy to work with and brought the wood up beautifully.
The oil didn't do the job that was required of it . After 5 days the application hadn't dried so I had to rub off with white spirit and sandpaper.
I am sorry to hear that you have had problems with this particular oil. Is it possible that there was something already on the wood that had prevented penetration of the oil ? If the oil was unable to absorb into the wood and remained sitting on the surface then it may not have dried.
There are a few other possibilities as to why your Tung oil did not dry and I would be happy to discuss further or offer some advice if you would like to get in touch. You can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org or give us a call on 0800 7818 123 and speak to one of our friendly advisers.

I have used this to coat my solid oak kitchen worktop. I used 3 coats of 50/50 with white spirit, then another 2 coats neat oil. It's made the wood look a beautiful darker colour and water from around the sink area is easy to wipe away as it sits on top instead of sinking into the wood.
On kayak paddle. Dries overnight to a non-slip water repellent finish. As an alternative to BLO is far preferable.
seems to be very good wish there had been instruction on tin had to use internet to find best instructions on how to apply
easy to apply and leaves a fantastic finish on the burnt larch that we are installing
Perhaps an intermediate sized tin. I've quite a bit left over and I'm not sure when I'll be able to use it up
Appears more like walnut than oak on our light oak worktops. Very disappointed.
Thank you for your time to review the Tung Oil. Although this is a clear oil, like many others it will darken the wood slightly to give what we call the ' wet look ' you can test for this by wiping a damp cloth over the bare wood, the darkening you get from doing that will give an indication of how an oil will darken. We always recommend test areas first and I would be happy to advice further, if you have any questions you can send them to email@example.com
Kind regards Sam.
I've been using the Tung Oil to waterproof/resist some Canadian Maple Ply, Bodysurfing hand-planes. The oil is very pure, applies easily with a foam brush and dries to the touch quickly (2 days or so) and leaves a none yellow coat/finish. So far so good. Next stage is to test it in the sea for its hydrophobic qualities.
Has brought out the colour of the wood brilliantly
I would definately buy this if needed again in the future it was lovely to use very easy with great results
makes your furniture like new.
looks and smells same as other quality brands however its cheaper will review again once used several times on different woods
Absolutely thrilled with this product. My oak bench was in a terrible state - having spent 3 hours sanding it down, I did exactly what the web site told me to do, one coat left three days, 2nd coat same and third coat the same. If put the life back into the wood, very pleased with the result. Looks just like new now. Also very easy to use and apply.
Excellent oil without UV block
I have used Tung oil for many years. It is first class at sealing and bringing out the full colour and quality of timber. We use it on kitchen work tops as well as oak shelving and oak mantle pieces.
The oak table top was sanded back and cleaned with White Spirit and when I applied a thin coat and allowed days for the Tung Oil to dry it was peeling like someone's back, after being burnt in the sun. I re-sanded twice more with the same results and eventually gave up. I have gone back to external varnish, which works a treat. Not impressed with this product. AVOID
Hello Mr Harris,
Thank you for sending us some feedback. It sounds to me like there was something on the surface of the table that is preventing the oil from penetrating the wood. Oils are designed to soak into the surface of the wood and will not peel and flake as they allow the wood to breath by leaving it Microporous.
If they are prevented from penetrating then they will dry on the surface of the wood and thisis when flaking can occur. We are always happy to discuss further or offer some more advice should you wish you can call our free phone number 0800 7818 123 and talk to one of our helpful advisors.
