Wooden surfaces to be treated with Sikkens Cetol BL Opaque must be in sound condition and free from all traces of dirt, dust, wax, grease and any other surface contaminates. Allow timber to acclimatise to its end-use environment before treating. The moisture content should not exceed 18% prior to coating.

Bare and New Timber

  • Degrease any exposed bare timber surface by wiping with a lint-free cloth dampened with methylated spirit
  • Allow solvent to evaporate fully before over coating
  • Resinous deposits should be removed with a scraper
  • The use of knotting agents is not recommended by Sikkens with Cetol BL Opaque, particularly on exterior work, as they are not always fully effective in 'sealing in' resin and can impair adhesion of this product
  • Where there is a risk of extractive discolouration occurring, the use of Sikkens Cetol BL Primer is recommended to minimise the problem
  • Only use specifically designed wood fillers for repairs to the timber, as general or "all purpose" fillers may not be suitable
  • Apply one coat of Sikkens Cetol BL Primer or Sikkens Cetol HLS Plusprior to applying Sikkens Cetol Opaque finish
  • Where possible, the first coat should be applied all round prior to fixing
  • Only use non-ferrous screws, nails and fixings

Previously Coated Timber

  • Sikkens Cetol BL Opaque cannot be used on substrates or wood preservatives which have water-repellent properties, i.e. have been treated with waxes or oils
  • Base stained / primed timber should be denibbed (lightly sanded) using a fine grade nylon abrasive pad or a fine grade (P240 or finer) wet or dry silicon carbide abrasive paper, in the direction of the grain, and ensuring not to break through the surface coating
  • All traces of sanding dust must be thoroughly removed before coating
  • Where there is localised damage, or deterioration has occurred as a result of exposure of the factory coating for longer than 3 months, affected areas should be thoroughly sanded back to a sound substrate

Old Timber

Decayed timber must be removed and replaced, cutting at least 25mm into sound timber.

Always do a test area before starting any project and follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Application conditions should be between 5℃ and 30℃, relative humidity must be no more than 85%. Moisture content of timber to be coated should not exceed 20%.

Sikkens Cetol BL Opaque is ready for use straight from the tin and does not require thinning.

  1. Apply two coats of Sikkens Cetol BL Opaque with a good quality brush or roller
  2. Allow 6 hours between coats

Regular Cleaning

For regular cleaning, wipe wood surfaces with a lint-free cloth and warm water.

  1. Lightly sand with a fine grade abrasive paper to keep splinters and rough edges away
  2. If the timber has been stained, lightly sand but avoid sanding back to underlying stain
  3. Remove all dust thoroughly and apply 1 or 2 coats of Sikkens Cetol BL Opaque

Excellent product - good coverage and appears to protect well by Brian Livesey

Excellent product - good coverage and appears to protect well, as far as I can see. Used to repaint cedar greenhouse which came painted with Sikkens and has lasted for about eight years without needing repainting until now.
