Wooden surfaces to be treated with Sikkens paints and primers must be in sound condition and free from all traces of dirt, dust, wax, grease and any other surface contaminates. Allow timber to acclimatise to its end-use environment before treating. The moisture content should not exceed 18% prior to coating.

Bare and New Timber

  • Degrease any exposed bare timber surface by wiping with a cloth dampened with a suitable solvent
  • Resinous deposits should be removed with a scraper
  • Any remaining residues should be removed using a lint-free cloth dampened with methylated spirits
  • Allow solvent to evaporate fully before over coating
  • The use of knotting agents is not recommended by Sikkens with Cetol BL Opaque, particularly on exterior work, as they are not always fully effective in 'sealing in' resin and can impair adhesion of this product
  • Where there is a risk of extractive discolouration occurring, the use of Sikkens Cetol BL Primer is recommended to minimise the problem

  • Only use specifically designed wood fillers for repairs to the timber
  • General or all-purpose fillers may not be suitable
  • Where possible, the first coat should be applied all round prior to fixing
  • Only use non-ferrous screws, nails and fixings

Previously Coated Timber

  • Sikkens Cetol BL Opaque cannot be used on substrates or wood preservatives which have water-repellent properties i.e. have been treated with waxes or oils
  • Base stained / primed timber should be denibbed using a fine grade nylon abrasive pad or a fine grade (P240 or finer) wet or dry silicon carbide abrasive paper, in the direction of the grain, and ensuring not to break through the surface coating
  • All traces of sanding / denibbing dust must be thoroughly removed before coating
  • Where there is localised damage, or deterioration has occurred as a result of exposure of the factory coating for longer than 3 months, affected areas should be thoroughly sanded back to a sound substrate

Old Timber

Decayed timber must be removed and replaced, cutting at least 25mm into sound timber.

Always do a test area before starting any project and follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Application conditions should be between 5℃ and 30℃, relative humidity must be no more than 85%. Moisture content of timber to be coated should not exceed 20%.

Sikkens Cetol BL Opaque is ready for use straight from the tin and does not require thinning.

  1. Apply one coat of Cetol BL Primer or Cetol HLS with a brush or roller
  2. Apply two finishing coats of Cetol BL Opaque
  3. Allow 6 hours between coats
