Overview

Overview

Back

Osmo Door Oil is made from a blend of natural oils, waxes and resins that are designed to enhance the appearance and protect a wide range of softwood and hardwood interior doors.

Osmo Door Oil 3060 (clear satin) emphasises the natural wood grain, giving a 'wet-look' finish whilst Osmo Door Oil 3033 (Raw) is designed to better retain the natural, untreated or raw appearance of internal doors.

Please note: Always check the manufacturers label on the door or with the door manufacturer before applying a door finish to confirm suitability. Some products may not be suitable for some types of door.

Due to the small amount of white pigments in the 'Raw' version of this product (3033), a faint white sheen may be visible on darker, exotic wood species. For this reason a test area is strongly recommended. For dark and extractive-rich hardwoods such as Wenge, Merbau and Jatoba, we recommend using Osmo Wood Wax Finish Extra Thin (1101). This is a very thin oil that can better penetrate the dense wood grain of exotic hardwoods.

Preparation

Preparation

Back

Doors to be treated with Osmo Door Oil should be clean, dry and frost-free (moisture content max. 18%).

  1. Fill small cracks, larger joints or holes with the most suitable Osmo Wood Filler
  2. Previously oiled doors should be thoroughly cleaned using meths
  3. Old paints and lacquers must be completely removed to expose fresh / bare wood
  4. Doors should not be sanded any finer than with a 120 grit sandpaper
  5. Remove all traces of sanding dust with a vacuum cleaner or lint-free cloth dampened with methylated spirit

Doors situated in moisture rich environments such as kitchens and bathrooms can be treated with Osmo Wood Protector (4006) for additional protection prior to oiling. This base-coat is only recommended for use on doors being treated with the clear-satin door oil (3060) and not the 'Raw' version (3033). The base-coat (4006) will likely darken the wood to some degree which goes against what the 'Raw' is designed to achieve.

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the instructions on the osmo tin at all times. Stir well before use.

  1. Apply the oil with an Osmo Soft Tip Brush, Osmo Premium Microfibre Roller, clean lint-free cloth or sponge
  2. Apply thinly and evenly, working in the direction of the wood grain, removing any excess
  3. Over application or insufficient ventilation can lead to delayed drying times and/or a sticky finish
  4. Apply two thin coats of door oil for the best protection
  5. If possible, apply to all sides of the door, including edges, prior to installation

Finishing

Finishing

Back

Doors that have been treated with Osmo Door Oil 3060 (satin) can be buffed to lift the sheen. For additional shine, doors can be polished with a clear wax or polish if desired.

Here are some of the more commonly asked questions and answers about Osmo oil for doors. If you are looking for an answer to a more general door finishing question, take a look at our door finishes FAQ page.

Can you use Osmo oil on oak veneer doors?

With veneers, it is very difficult to know what is best for them as each manufacturer uses a different glue to hold them together. Depending on what binds the glue, would depend on what finish is suitable for the project. You should be able to find this information from the manufacturers paperwork when the door is purchased and/ or on their website. If it is an old, veneered door and you are unsure of the manufacturer, test areas are vital to ensure product suitability and compatibility.

How long does Osmo Door Oil take to dry?

Osmo Door Oil is touch-dry in 6 hours and fully dry in 24 hours. High room temperature and low humidity may speed drying whilst low temperatures and high humidity may increase drying times. Apply to internal doors thinly and follow the manufacturers instructions at all times.

Which Osmo oil is best for oak doors?

Osmo Door Oil is perfect for solid oak and veneered oak doors. It's made from a unique blend of oils and waxes specifically designed to seal and protect interior wooden doors. The oil formulation penetrates to protect internal doors from grease, finger and hand marks, dirt, scuffs, stains and moisture. The microporous finish will not crack, peel, flake or blister.

How do you use Osmo Door Oil?

Osmo Door Oil is very easy to apply and maintain. New bare wood or freshly sanded doors must be free from dust, dirt and any other surface contaminants. Use a natural bristle brush or uncoloured, lint-free cloth / microfiber cloth to apply the door oil. The key to a perfect finish is to apply the oil thinly and wipe off any excess oil from the surface. Only apply 2 thin coats as per the manufacturers instructions. For a more detailed guide on how to use Osmo Door Oil, see our YouTube guide to oiling wooden doors here.

Does Osmo Door Oil darken the wood?

Osmo Door Oil, as with any other wood oil or door oil, will darken the wood to give it an almost damp like appearance that enhances the natural character and grain of the timber. This can be tested before applying the oil by using a damp (not wet) clean cloth and slightly dampening the wood of the door. How the wood looks when damp is a good indication of how the door will look once oiled. To better retain the natural, untreated look of Oak doors, whilst still offering the same level of protection, consider Osmo Door Oil (Raw 3033).

How many doors will a 1 litre tin of Osmo Door Oil do?

It would depend on how porous the wood is and whether there are any glass panes in the door. Osmo recommend a coverage of up to 24m² per litre. From a 1 litre tin, you should get approx 4 doors finished on both sides.

Will the Satin 3060 change the colour of the wood?

The Satin 3060 is a clear oil but even clear oils can darken the timber slightly (as if it's been wiped with a damp cloth) The Raw 3033 is designed to keep the door looking as light and natural as possible without compromising its durability but this is only suitable for light coloured timbers such as pine, oak or larch.

Would this be suitable for a white door or is it only for oak? I want to use a clear Matt oil for my white doors and do not want it to be satin

It would depend on the current finish on the door. The Osmo door Oil is a penetrative oil which needs to be applied to bare or previously oiled, porous timber. Give our Woodcare Experts a call for some detailed, specific advice on your project. You can reach us on 01303 213838.

Is it best to use Osmo Door Oil on internal doors before or after they have been hung?

We would recommend applying the oil on doors prior to hanging. This allows you to reach all angles of the door and seal in the end grains so that they are well protected.

Would Osmo Door Oil work over a waxed door to revive the colour?

Osmo Door Oil can only be applied to bare wood or previously oiled surfaces. If the doors were waxed some time ago, it is unlikley that much wax remains to block the wood grain. You should sand the doors back with a 120 grit paper to remove the wax. Try using Woodleys Wax and Polish Remover to help break down the wax too.

Can you use Osmo Door Oil on the floor?

Osmo Door Oil is specifically designed for doors due to its high wax content, meaning it helps to reduce finger marks. We would recommend using Osmo Polyx Oil on flooring as the most durable product in the Osmo range for this kind of project.

Thicker than Osmo Polyx Oil and dries faster. Really. Nice satin finish, more like a semi matt. Recommend buying the osmo pads to wipe of excess to create a perfect finish

Easy to apply, looks great
Used to oil an oak veneer door. Be careful not to over-apply, use fairly sparingly. Two coats was perfect. Pity it doesn’t come in more sizes.
