Cuprinol Wood Preserver Clear (BP) can be used as a pre-treatment prior to using Cuprinol 5 Year Ducksback or other compatible interior or exterior protective wood finishes.

Looking for a water based wood preservative? Try Cuprinol 5 Star Complete Wood Treatment (WB).

Ensure that surfaces to be treated are clean, dry and free from surface dirt, debris and other organic matter including mould, mildew, algae and fungi.

  • Remove any surface biological growth, dirt and debris with a stiff brush, broom or scraper
  • Areas affected by biological growth should be treated with a suitable mould and mildew cleaner or fungicidal wash
  • All rotten timber must be cut out and replaced

Always do a test area before starting any project to test appearance and suitability of the product on the timber to be treated. Follow the manufacturers instructions on the container at all times.

  1. Apply 2-3 uniform coats of Cuprinol Wood Preserver with a brush
  2. For dip application, dip the timber for at least 3 minutes if practical
  3. Allow 24 hours drying time between coats

Please Note: The application of this product may cause darkening of some timbers. To ensure thorough protection, treat all surfaces. Apply to any surfaces cut after treatment.

After drying, wood glues, fillers, mastics and knotting solutions can be used on the timber as normal. Treated wood should be allowed to dry for 6 - 8 weeks before laying plastic floor coverings, rubber backed carpets or underlay, hanging vinyl wallpaper or using mastics. Do not spill on asphalt, bitumen, bitumen felt, tar, plaster, plastics, paint, etc.

Drying times can vary between 1-5 days dependant upon climate conditions and top coat.

Once fully dry, a solvent or water-based finish can be applied such as a Cuprinol wood oil or Cuprinol wood stain. Cuprinol Wood Preservative is compatible with many wood paints, varnishes, stains and oils from other manufacturer's.

If used as a standalone treatment and not over-coated with another product, Cuprinol Wood Preserver Clear (BP) can be topped up as and when required by following the preparation and application instructions above. If it is over-coated, there is no need to maintain this product. The top coat should be maintained in accordance with the maintenance instructions provided by the manufacturer for that product.

Easy to work with by David Swann

A couple of coats like this and the wood was looking great and could visibly see the difference in terms of water repellent. Goes a long way and brushes clean easily

Bought to provide initial protection to all outer and inner surfaces of new log cabin as well as supporting timbers. Easy to apply and coverage is extensive. Approx 9 litres used to provide two full coats. Brush cleaning simple.

Preserves decking but darkens it a little by Alice Joyce Phillips

It darkened the wood a bit despite being clear but otherwise was good and I put two coats on before using cuprinol anti slip, can be applied easily and brushes wash out with water

Good base coat for any other stain or garden finish by David Butler

Cuprinol is a firm favourite with me - it does what it says with no fuss. The claer wood preserver has worked well for me in the past, so why use anything else? (I do have some experience of other products form other manufacturers and they don't always do what they say on the tin - 5 year wood-stain lasting just two before flaking, for example)

As described, easy to apply by brush, though very watery by Elina

As it is a preserver it is hard to tell immediately if it is working, but soaked up to wood very easily.
