We tested both products included in the PeelAway 1 & 7 Test Kit in part one of our guide to using PeelAway. We found that PeelAway 1 paint stripper was the most suitable for stripping the many layers of old paint from our door.
Application
The application process is exactly the same as with the tester kit:
Use either the supplied spatula or a brush and make sure you prepare properly – this is powerful stuff.
- Protect surrounding areas such as floors and walls
- Wear gloves and old clothing
- Work carefully and methodically
The thickness of the coating will depend on how many layers of paint you’re removing, but around 3–4mm is ideal for most jobs.
Once applied, the surface is covered with large sections of the PeelAway sheeting to keep the product active. Any air bubbles are smoothed out.
How Long Should I Leave The Peelaway On The Paint?
We checked back after six hours and it was clear that the PeelAway was doing its job beneath the sheet. However, as the product was still quite wet, we decided to leave it to work for a little longer.
After 24 hours, the results were hugely satisfying. The old layers of paint lifted away easily, revealing the surface beneath with minimal effort. One of the key advantages of PeelAway 1 is that it can be used to strip lead paint. There is no dust, no potentially harmful debris, and no messy cleanup – all achieved using a low-VOC paint stripping system.
Neutralising & Last Steps
Once the residue had been removed, the door is treated with a spray application of PeelAway 1 Neutraliser (included in the kit), followed by a thorough sanding to prepare the surface for finishing.
The transformation really speaks for itself, achieved with far less effort and mess than traditional paint strippers or the dreaded heat gun.
More Than Just Wood
It’s also worth remembering that PeelAway isn’t just suitable for wood. It can be used to remove masonry paint and to strip paint from metal.
