Overview
Vandyke crystals have been used as a traditional method for staining hardwoods for centuries. More recently, they have also been used on Pine and other softwood species. Producing a colour that can range from a very light to a dark brown, the shade of this natural wood stain can be altered by changing the concentration of Vandyke Crystals to water. It is recommended that you keep a record of the concentration of Vandyke crystals to water, as this will help if additional batches of the same colour are required.
The colour produced by Manns Trade Vandyke Crystals can also be adjusted by adding Manns Classic Wood Dye such as red, yellow, orange or brown to achieve a wide range of colours and shades.

Preparation
Ensure that wooden surfaces to be stained are dry, clean and free from surface dirt, debris and other surface contaminants.
- Fill any gaps or splits in the wood with a suitable wood filler
- Sand along the wood grain to no lower than a 150 grit ensuring a consistent finish
- Wipe down the surface with a slightly damp lint-free cloth or vacuum to remove all traces of sanding dust
- New, bare wood or wood that has been freshly sanded or stripped can be wiped down with white spirit to clean and degrease if necessary
- Mask off and protect any surfaces and areas not to be dyed
Application
Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the container at all times.
Initial Procedure
Contrary to popular belief, Vandyke crystals are best dissolved in cold water rather than warm or hot, which is the usual recommendation for mixing.
- Place the Vandyke crystals into a container, then add an appropriate amount of water
- Leave overnight, then give the mixture an occasional stir or shake
- The amount of crystals you add is up to you but 10% or 1 part Van Dyke to 9 parts water is a good starting place based on weight
- As well as varying the depth of colour with the concentration of Vandyke crystals to water, the colour can also be adjusted by adding one of our concentrated wood dyes, which are available in red, yellow, orange, blue, black, brown and white
Application
- When ready, the made-up stain can be applied with a sponge, paint brush or spray gun system
- Allow 1 hour for the stain to dry, or longer in cold, damp or humid conditions
Finishing
Once dry, the stain should be sealed with a suitable top such as a wood varnish, wax or wood oil

Alternative brands of interior wood varnish or wood lacquer can be used.
If using a water-based top coat, apply the first coat thinly, passing over the surface with few strokes to avoid any lifting or dragging of the stain. Apply the second coat as normal, de-nibbing between coats.
