Preparation

Preparation

Back

Ensure that the wood to be treated is clean, dry, and free from surface dirt, loose debris, and any other contaminants.

Bare and New Timber

  • Brush the surface of the wood with a stiff brush or broom to remove any ingrained dirt and debris
  • Organic matter including mould, mildew, algae or fungi must be removed with a suitable wood cleaner
  • All rotten timber must be cut out and replaced, at least 25mm in to good wood to ensure that all of the rot has been fully removed
  • If the wood surface is looking worn or has greyed from sun damage and the effects of weathering, a suitable wood reviver or restorer should be used to revive the wood
  • Treat the wood with a suitable exterior wood preservative to protect against mould, algae, fungi and insect attack if required

Previously Coated Timber

Manns Premier Fence Oil cannot be used over timber that has been painted, varnished or treated with a coating type stain. Any old surface coatings must be fully removed to expose bare wood before the timber can be oiled.

  1. Old oil finishes should be cleaned thoroughly with a suitable cleaner
  2. For fencing and other surfaces that are or have been affected by mould, algae or black patches, treat the wood with a mould and mildew cleaner prior to applying a wood preservative
  3. For the best protection, apply an exterior wood preservative to protect against mould, algae, dry rot, woodworm and wood related diseases
  4. If possible, preserve all sides and edges, including end grain prior to installation
  5. Wood preservative should be allowed to dry for a minimum of 24 hours before applying Manns Premier Fence Oil

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish.

  1. Stir the contents of the tin thoroughly before and periodically during use for a consistent finish
  2. Apply an even coat of Manns Premier Fence Oil with a sutiable brush in the direction of the wood grain. Can also be spray applied with the Selecta 7 Shed and Fence Spray System.
  3. Allow up to 12 hours drying time between coats

Does the Manns Fence Oil have any biocides in it?

Absolutely, the Manns Fence Oil has biocides within the formula to provide additional protection against mould and fungal attack.

Should I sand the fence before applying Manns Fence Oil?

It depends on the condition and species of the fence. It is not always necessary, but a light sand will help to open up the wood grain and allow the oil to penetrate through.
