Graphenstone Siena is a lime and mineral-based paint for creating decorative limewash effects on interior surfaces. Applied with a limewash brush, mitt or sponge, it produces soft tonal variation and subtle texture with a natural matt finish. Its breathable formula allows moisture vapour to pass through the painted surface and absorbs carbon dioxide as the lime cures.
Siena can be used on properly prepared plaster, plasterboard, drywall, brick, prefabricated boards and previously painted surfaces. Wood, metal and other non-porous surfaces require Graphenstone Four2Four primer. Once fully cured after around 30 days, Siena provides a washable finish with Class 1 wet scrub resistance. For the intended limewash effect, apply two coats and allow each coat to dry before continuing.

Prepare the surface before applying Graphenstone Siena. The substrate should be sound, clean and dry, with any existing paint firmly adhered. Carry out a test area to check the preparation and the finished limewash effect.
If working on a surface painted before the 1960s, take precautions before sanding or removing old coatings, as they may contain lead.
Always apply a small test area first to check the colour, surface suitability and limewash effect. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and wear gloves and eye protection when handling Siena, as the wet paint is alkaline.
Siena can look patchy while the lime cures. Allow 3-4 days for its opacity and colour to develop before deciding whether any areas need attention.
Allow Graphenstone Siena to dry for approximately 24 hours. The limewash effect and full opacity will continue to develop over the next 3-4 days, so areas that initially look patchy may even out as the paint cures.
For damp rooms, Graphenstone recommends a suitable protective finish to help reduce water and dirt absorption. Siena should not be used on surfaces in permanent contact with water.
What sort of finish does Graphenstone Siena create?
Siena creates a decorative limewash effect with soft variations in tone. The final appearance depends on the surface and the direction and pressure of the application strokes.
What surfaces can Siena be applied to?
It is suitable for properly prepared interior plaster, plasterboard, drywall, brick, prefabricated boards and previously painted surfaces. Wood, metal and other non-porous surfaces require Graphenstone Four2Four primer.
Does Siena need a primer?
This depends on the surface. Graphenstone specifies Ambient Primer for absorbent substrates and Four2Four for wood, metal and non-porous surfaces. Plasterboard or filled areas may need spot priming and/or a mist coat of NaturColor or BaseCoat.
How many coats are needed?
Apply two coats for a limewash effect, allowing 2-4 hours between coats under the conditions stated in the technical data sheet. Coverage is approximately 10-12 m² per litre per coat, depending on the surface and application method.
Can Siena be applied with a roller or spray gun?
For the decorative limewash effect, Graphenstone specifies a limewash brush, applicator mitt or sponge. A roller or airless sprayer is listed for its separate brick whitewash technique.
When can the painted surface be cleaned?
Siena takes approximately 30 days to fully cure. Avoid rubbing or cleaning it during this period. Once fully cured, it has a Class 1 wet scrub rating and can be cleaned gently.
Can Siena be used in kitchens and bathrooms?
It can be used in damp rooms, but protect the fresh paint from water and condensation during its initial cure. Graphenstone recommends a suitable protective finish to reduce water and dirt absorption. Do not use Siena on surfaces in permanent contact with water.
