Preparation

Preparation

Back

For best results, make sure your surface, tools and product are clean before you begin.

Preparing Concrete Surfaces for Painting

  1. Leave new concrete uncoated for at least 3 months before painting
  2. Repair and fill any old or unsound concrete surfaces, allowing adequate time for the filler used to cure
  3. Once completely dry, brush the surface with a stiff bristled brush to remove any surface dust
  4. Prime any areas that remain powdery with Farrow & Ball Masonry & Plaster Stabilising Primer
  5. For interior concrete floors only apply one full coat of Farrow & Ball Masonry & Plaster Stabilising Primer followed by two coats of Farrow and Ball Modern Eggshell allowing the recommended drying times between coats
  6. Do not use Farrow & Ball Masonry & Plaster Stabilising Primer as a general primer on sound concrete surfaces other than interior concrete floors

Concrete Floors

  1. Old or unsound surfaces must be repaired and filled allowing adequate time to cure before repainting
  2. New concrete should be left at least 3 months before painting
  3. Follow with one coat of Farrow & Ball Masonry & Plaster Stabilising Primer
  4. For painted concrete floors, clean and remove any surface debris. Rub down any areas that have peeled or blistered to achieve a good 'key'
  5. Apply Farrow & Ball Masonry & Plaster Stabilising Primer to areas of exposed concrete

Underfloor Heating

  1. Prior to application, the heating must be switched off for 48 hours to allow the surface area to cool down. Once surface has been painted, allow a further 48 hours before the heating is switched back on

  1. Please be aware that unsound surfaces may not successfully accept any additional paint layers - therefore if in doubt it is recommend you seek professional advice
  2. Surfaces with serious structural damage, such as cracking or loose cement, must be repaired before any paint is applied
  3. Patch prime any repaired or seriously degraded areas with one coat of Farrow & Ball Masonry & Plaster Stabilising Primer, followed by two coats of Farrow and Ball 15 Year Exterior Masonry by brush or roller
  4. Take care not to apply too thickly in hollows and angled sections and allow the recommended drying times between coats
  5. Fungal or algal contaminated surfaces should be decontaminated with a fungicidal wash then left to dry out completely
