Bona Amber Primer is a water-based wood primer for domestic and commercial flooring. Produces a rich, amber wood colouration on wooden flooring, similar to that of traditional solvent-based lacquers but with none of the hazards associated. It is ideal for floors with underfloor heating and/or moving floors such as end grain or plank floors. GreenGuard approved for low indoor emissions.

Looking for an alternative wood primer? Try one of the following Bona primers:

Preparation

Preparation

Ensure floor to be treated is acclimatised to its end-use environment. The surface must be sanded back to bare wood, dry and free from any sanding dust, oil, wax or other contaminants.

Application

Application

Back

Always do a test area before starting any project to to asses product suitability and finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the container at all times.

Allow product to reach room temperature. Optimal application conditions are between 18-25°C and 30-60% relative air humidity. High temperatures and low humidity shorten drying time, low temperatures and high humidity lengthen drying time. Minimum temperature for use is 13°C.

  1. If required, dilute with Bona Retarder (4%) for longer open time
  2. Apply evenly using a Bona Lacquer Roller or Bona Applicator Sleeve avoiding build up
  3. Care should be taken to achieve a uniform level of timber saturation. This will avoid colour variation
  4. Always maintain a 'wet edge' to avoid overlaps
  5. Once dry, abrade to reduce grain raise using the Bona Scrad system or a sanding screen, grit 150 or finer
  6. Remove any sanding dust
  7. Apply an additional layer of Bona Amber Primer and allow to dry
  8. It is not recommended to apply more than two full coats per day due to risk of excessive wood swelling

Finishing

Finishing

Back

Please Note: Bona Amber Primer should never be used as a standalone treatment for timber floors.

Once the 2nd coat of primer has dried, a top coat of one of the following Bona water-borne lacquers must be applied:

Product Use
Bona Mega Varnish A clear, water-based, ready-to-use, polyurethane varnish for wooden flooring
Bona Traffic HD A two-part waterborne lacquer for heavy traffic environments
Bona Traffic HD Anti Slip A two-part, polyurethane anti-slip varnish for wooden floors and stairs

For domestic floors, 1 coat of lacquer is recommended, 2 coats for commercial floors. The top coat will further enhance the colour.
