You need a high\u00a0quality stockinette cloth,\u00a0microfibre cloth,\u00a0foam sponge or\u00a0cotton sheets for easy finishing, and picking the right one is very important.<\/p>\n<p>Cotton cloths are\u00a0absorbent and perfect\u00a0for applying oils and stains. Microfibre cloths have thousands\u00a0of tiny fibres per square centimetre, so they work really well with wood cleaning products. There&#8217;s a specialist cloth for the job whether you&#8217;re applying finishes, buffing\u00a0or cleaning a\u00a0wooden surface, and there&#8217;s a product designed for every finish whether it&#8217;s\u00a0oil, a wax wood finish,\u00a0lacquer,\u00a0varnish or stain.<\/p>\n<h3>How to decide which wood finishing supplies you need<\/h3>\n<p>Our first piece of advice is this: <u>always<\/u> follow the manufacturer&#8217;s instructions. Other than that, here\u00a0are a few basic guidelines to help you make the right decision.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Solvent-based varnishes and lacquers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You want to get as much product into the wood as you can and spread it quickly and smoothly without making\u00a0puddles. Traditionally, a China bristle brush, made from hollow hog hairs, was the way to go, or a lambswool or synthetic wool applicator on a\u00a0block of wood.\u00a0On the downside, new natural lambswool applicators can shed fibres and need a good comb or wash\u00a0before use.<\/p>\n<p>The latest\u00a0applicator technology makes life much easier. A T-bar applicator, for example,\u00a0is great for applying any finish, even fiddly bits like door frames, and\u00a0tends to be faster than a lambswool applicator.<\/p>\n<p>You can also apply\u00a0the product with a roller. It&#8217;s\u00a0fast and means you don&#8217;t have to mess with the finish too much, which can spoil the final effect.\u00a0Different manufacturers recommend application with\u00a0a natural bristle brush, nylon pad or even a spray gun. <u>Always<\/u> check the manufacturer&#8217;s instructions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Water-based varnishes and lacquers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">A special floor finish applicator is ideal for floors, and microfibre rollers come in two\u00a0sizes. The 25cm version\u00a0is ideal for large flat areas like the tops of furniture.\u00a0The 10cm size is ideal for the areas surrounding a door, skirting etc.\u00a0Fixtures like\u00a0picture rails and stair spindles tend to be easier to finish with the Mako brush. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">To apply soft liquid wax or\u00a0thicker paste waxes like\u00a0Supreme Wax, simply\u00a0rub it on and wipe it off with a cloth. Some waxes respond better to being brushed on.\u00a0If it\u2019s a wipe-on wax, a stockinette cloth makes a good applicator.\u00a0Slightly rough wood or wood with a\u00a0slightly\u00a0rough finish can be waxed and smoothed by applying the wax with a chunk of fine steel wool. Wipe the excess wax\u00a0off\u00a0with a clean piece of stockinette and, for\u00a0extra shine, buff it with stockinette too.\u00a0There isn\u2019t a limit to how long a wax polish can be left before buffing, but generally speaking if you leave it for more than a day it&#8217;ll take\u00a0more elbow grease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Wax finishes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To apply liquid or paste wax, all you do is\u00a0rub it on and wipe it off (check the packaging, however, as some products are designed to be brushed on).\u00a0If it&#8217;s a wipe-on wax, a\u00a0pad or a chunk of fine steel wool makes a good applicator.\u00a0Wipe the wax\u00a0off\u00a0with paper towels and, for\u00a0extra shine, buff it with a soft, lint-free cloth.\u00a0The longer you leave the wax\u00a0to dry, the more shiny the finished result will be.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oil finishes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Apply your oil thinly\u00a0using a soft brush or cloth,\u00a0following the grain. Let it soak in as directed on the packaging, then even out\u00a0any excess with a dry cotton cloth. Leave it for as long as the manufacturer recommends<span style=\"color: #333333;\"> before carrying out a\u00a0light &#8216;denib&#8217;, which simply means removing any trapped dirt or dust from the surface before adding the next coat.\u00a0\u00a0You can either leave the final coat as it is or buff it to a sheen. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0.49cm; margin-bottom: 0.49cm;\"><strong>Stains and dyes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0.49cm; margin-bottom: 0.49cm;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">You apply water-based stains and dyes with a natural or synthetic bristle brush, foam applicator or cotton cloth. Again, it\u2019s vital to check the manufacturer\u2019s instructions.
