If you\u2019ve ever installed fresh exterior timber, you\u2019ll know the feeling – it looks incredible at first\u2026 and then the weather starts to get to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within months, untreated wood can begin to grey, crack, split and warp. That\u2019s exactly what products like Osmo UV Protection Oil are designed to prevent – and in this video, we show you how to apply it properly to new cladding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The process shown in the video applies perfectly to the Extra version and getting this right makes all the difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Prep properly (don\u2019t skip this)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Wood must be clean, dry and frost-free
\u2022 Leave 2-3 dry days after rain
\u2022 Sand new wood to 120 grit (maximum)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For brand new timber, there\u2019s even a case for letting it weather slightly (around 6 weeks), so it becomes more absorbent and accepts the oil better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Stir thoroughly<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Same rule as always:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Stir well before use
\u2022 Don’t shake<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You want all the oils, pigments and active ingredients evenly mixed before application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Apply thinly<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If there\u2019s one takeaway from the video, it\u2019s this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Using a soft-tip or hollow bristle brush:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Apply along the grain
\u2022 Work it into the surface
\u2022 Keep the coat thin and even<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Osmo is designed to soak in, not sit on top<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Too much product = longer drying times and a tacky finish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
