Native to Southeast Asia, \n\nBalau<\/a> is a popular hardwood decking choice. Naturally durable and resistant against the elements, its high oil content acts as a protective barrier. Balau decking requires less maintenance than other wood types due to its density, but maintenance is still a key role in preserving its form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before applying any treatment to your \n\nBalau decking<\/a>, it is important to leave the wood to weather. This is crucial as it will ensure the wood has acclimatized. We recommend following the manufacturers instruction regarding a weathering period. This can range from 3 to 6 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When looking into suitable products for your Balau decking, you will want a \n\nformula that penetrates the surface<\/a>. Due to the density of the wood, it products that sit on the surface will not dry or absorb, leaving a sticky residue. Balau decking needs to be regularly oiled, we suggest reapplication yearly but if needed sooner, then we recommend to apply as needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As usual, we strongly advise the use of a test area before committing to your project fully. A test area will ensure you are happy with the product and its finish, saving you time and money in the long run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Balau wood, we recommend 006 Bangkirai <\/em>as we find this is the most complimentary colour. This enhances the natural texture of the wood whilst still giving that pop of colour. With this product having such a thin consistency, it can effectively penetrate the grain of the wood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For added protection and an anti-slip finish, we recommend the \n\nOsmo Anti-Slip Decking Oil<\/a> as a top coat to the \n\nOsmo Decking Oil<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To seal and protect end-grains against weather damage, the \n\nOsmo End Grain Sealing Wax<\/a> works a treat on Balau. This product prevents the wood shrinking or swelling, keeping your timber in tact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
