Decking timber has usually been pre-treated with a wood preserver. If using new unpreserved timber, treat with Barrettine Universal Wood Preserver prior to staining. Ideally apply 2 coats and leave for 5 days before using decking oil.
Decking oils or as sometimes referred to, decking stains, can prolong the look and life of exterior decking with a little regular maintenance. Our specially formulated decking oil contains agents that combat many of the problems that can be otherwise experienced with some of the other cheap decking oils available on the market.
Our decking oil is formulated to help prevent the build up of mould and fungus, it also contains UV filters that help to counter the bleaching effects of the sun on exterior decking.
Before applying decking stain to old decking, it is important to ensure that the decking is free from any pre existing algae, mildew or other contaminants. For the best results, it is recommended that the decking is given a thorough clean with a jet wash and then treated with a decking cleaner before the application of the decking oil.
To avoid extended drying times, decking stains or oils should be applied thinly with a minimum of 3 coats (4-5 coats ideally), it's generally best to get as many coats on as possible with a view to re-oiling the decking at least once a year. Drying times are generally between 12 and 24 hours depending on the condition of the decking, the application of the decking oil and environmental conditions. The ingredients within this oil tend to add a warm brown tint to your decking even though the decking oil itself does not contain any pigments.
