Solvent based wood stains

Our solvent based wood stain is made with the highest grade naptha and natural dyes that greatly enhance the wood grain, keeping it positive (otherwise known as striking). Inferior quality wood stains used on pine and other porous woods can give a washed out or zebra crossing effect where the wood between the grain is more striking than the grain itself producing an almost photo negative appearance.

Because some woods require heavier staining than others, it is well worth doing a small test area first to see what the eventual wood stain will look like on the wood or furniture to be worked. Extra care should be taken on the end grain areas (the cut ends) as they tend to absorb more of the solvent stain potentially creating a tide mark on the surface of the wood near the ends. Years of research and development have allowed us to greatly reduce this problem but care should be taken nonetheless.

To achieve a better depth of colour to the wood or furniture, 2-3 coats of solvent based wood stain can be applied. By adding other stains or one of our concentrated wood dyes such as yellow, red, orange or brown, you can create almost any colour for your project. Just select a wood stain that is closest to your requirement and adjust using one of the above methods, thousands of new shades can be created by inter-mixing products from our extensive range of wood stains and dyes.

To lighten a solvent stain, the best approach is to add cellulose thinners. Solvent stains are non grain raising, thus giving a smooth result every time without the need for sanding, they also works well with most top coats such as wax, oil or lacquer.

Any marks or blemishes in the wood are likely to show through after staining as solvent based wood stains do not cover blemishes or imperfections in the wood grain.

Our solvent based wood stain will keep at temperatures above freezing for a minimum of 1 year. We recommend that the wood stain is thoroughly shaken or stirred before use to get the best results from this product.

A paint brush is a neat way to apply Solvent based wood stains and helps keep the stain away from areas where it is not wanted, for example when staining skirting boards, door frames etc. but as a general rule always use masking tape when brushing. Always work on small areas at a time with this product.

A spray gun is the quickest way to apply solvent based wood stains, most spray systems will suffice. Once a generous coat has been applied, wipe back the surface with a sponge or absorbent cloth about 10 seconds after staining, to remove any excess woodstain.
