Primer

If coloured varnish is being applied directly to furniture or cupboard doors, the overall colour may vary by a degree or 2 depending on the colour of the wood. For example, darker woods such as oak and mahogany will darken the overall shade of the varnish while light woods such as pine will lighten the effect.

To avoid any colour change, it's recommended that a coloured varnish primer is used. The primer will fill any minor scratches, dents or imperfections making the surface easier to sand prior to the application of the top coat(s). As the primer is white in colour, it provides a neutral base or blank canvas thus providing a better colour match.

If a perfect match is not required, coloured varnish can be applied directly to a wooden surface without a primer base coat. Normally requiring at least 2 coats, 3 or more can be applied for added protection. It's important to remember that when applying directly to a wooden surface, the overall shade may be slightly lighter or darker than the colour from the tin.
