Extra Tough Clear Varnish

Extra Tough Clear Varnish is a strong, clear, water-based varnish that has been specifically manufactured to achieve superior durability on interior wooden surfaces. This clear varnish excels on any interior wooden surface that comes under heavy wear such as wooden flooring or kitchen work surfaces.

As with all non-pigmented products, the colour of your piece does change a little when the clear varnish is applied, customers often say however that this change is for the better. Our Extra Tough Clear Varnish tends to brighten the look of the wood a little enhancing the wood grain.

Another advantage of our Extra Tough Clear Varnish is that it can be tinted using our compatible water based dyes. This could be useful, if for example, a piece has been stained or finished with a lacquer but the colour is not to your liking. Simply add some brown dye to the clear varnish and apply another coat until the right shade is achieved. Further adjustments can be made by adding red, orange, yellow or black if necessary.

Please note that if you apply water based varnishes on top of a water based stain (or dye) then the water in the varnish can dislodge the water in the stain, which could result in a patchy finish. The way around this happening is to use a minimum of brush strokes, preferably passing the brush over the surface in one direction. However, this only needs to be done for the first layer of varnish, subsequent coats of clear varnish can be applied as normal. Spraying will also avoid this problem from occurring.

Extra Tough Clear Varnish can be easily applied by brush and can be cleaned off using warm water or methylated spirits before it dries.

This product is very easy to apply with a roller (sheepskin) and is also sprayable through most spray systems.

Clear Varnish Coverage

The clear varnish will cover approx 10 Square metres per litre depending on the temperature, amount applied and the type of wood being worked on.
500ml: Enough to cover about 2 side chairs.
1lt: Will cover a 2 door wardrobe or a large chest of drawers.
5lt: Will be enough for a floor about 7mtrs x 4mtrs (23ft x 14ft approx) with 2 coats.
20lt: About enough for an area the size of a tennis court.

Extra Tough Clear Varnish Drying Times

Re-coating time: 2 hours.

A medium coat of clear varnish will be touch dry within 1-2 hour. We recommend a curing time of up to 12 hours before using the surface as normal to ensure full penetration into the wood.
