Ensure that surfaces to be treated are clean, dry and free from dust, dirt, wax, grease and any other surface contaminates before applying Sikkens Rubbol XD Gloss.

New or Bare Timber

  • Timber should be acclimatised to its end-use environment prior to coating with Sikkens exterior paint products
  • The moisture content of the timber should not exceed 18% prior to coating
  • Degrease any exposed bare timber surface by wiping with a cloth dampened with a suitable solvent
  • Resinous deposits should be removed with a scraper
  • Any remaining residues should be removed using a lint-free cloth dampened with suitable solvent
  • Allow solvent to evaporate fully before over-coating with Sikkens XD Gloss
  • Knotting may be used to reduce extractive discolouration, however, knotting solutions are not always fully effective in sealing in resin, and the adhesion of Sikkens paint products can be impaired
  • When filling, be sure to use a suitable wood filler specifically designed for use with timber
  • Where a superficial application of preservative to softwood and hardwood is deemed necessary, ensure that the preservative pre-treatments are fully dry before the application of Rubbol XD Gloss
  • Do not use on substrates which have had water-repellent preservative pre-treatments applied (products that contain oil, wax or silicon)
  • Where possible, the first coat should be applied all round prior to fixing
  • Bare timber should receive one coat of Sikkens Rubbol Primer Plus all round prior to application of Sikkens gloss
  • On open grained timbers (e.g. oak, meranti, iroko) Rubbol Primer Plus should be worked well into the grain before laying off
  • For optimum gloss, Kodrin Spachtel should be used for grain filling
  • Only use non-ferrous screws, nails and fixings

Previously Coated Timber

  • Denib (lightly sand) using a fine grade nylon abrasive pad or a fine grade (P240 or finer) wet or dry silicon carbide abrasive paper, in the direction of the grain
  • Do not break through the surface coating, and remove all sanding dust
  • To ensure optimum durability, we recommend the use of one coat of Sikkens Rubbol Primer Plus prior to finishing with Sikkens gloss paint
  • Where there is localised damage, or deterioration has occurred as a result of exposure of the factory coating for longer than 3 months, affected areas should be thoroughly sanded back to a sound substrate and treated as 'New or Bare Timber' when applying Sikkens paints

Old Timber

All damaged or decayed timber must be removed and replaced, cutting at least 25mm into sound timber.

Always do a test area before starting any project and follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times.

Do not apply if there is a risk of rain, or when air / substrate temperatures are below 5℃ or above 30℃ during application or drying periods. Protect from frost and rain until dry. Failure to meet these requirements may adversely affect the drying, visual quality and durability of the finish.

Initial Procedure

Ensure product is thoroughly stirred before and during application, otherwise sheen and colour variations may be experienced. We do not recommend thinning Rubbol XD Gloss, as excessive thinning will reduce opacity.

  1. Apply Sikkens Rubbol XD Gloss using a good quality, long-haired, soft bristle brush
  2. The product should be applied in a full flowing coat, laying off in the direction of the grain, using the minimum number of brushstrokes necessary to produce an acceptable finish
  3. Avoid overbrushing, as this will reduce the protection afforded
  4. Two coats should be applied, allowing a minimum of 24 hours drying time between coats
  5. Pay special attention to any areas of exposed end grain, tops and bottoms of doors, and undersides of window sills
  6. The second coat should be applied to all exposed surfaces, as soon as possible after the first coat has dried, but no sooner than 24 hours and within 48 hours, in order to provide full protection
  7. If applied to exterior wood and the contract is of long duration, it is suggested that a further coat of Sikkens gloss be applied prior to hand over to make good any weathering during the construction period
  8. If the second coat is not applied within 48 hours, light sanding with a medium grade abrasive, to provide a surface key will be required, ensuring all dust is removed afterwards

For further information regarding coating thicknesses, refer to the Technical Information pdf above.

The need for maintenance is indicated by a lightening in colour and reduction in sheen as the coating erodes, and a loss of water repellency. If this occurs, simply apply a fresh coat of Sikkens Rubbol XD Gloss, following the Preparation and Application instructions above.
