Ronseal Super Flexible Primer and Undercoat helps prepare bare exterior wood before top coating with Ronseal's 10 Year Exterior Wood Paints. Also ensures the 10 Year guarantee. Use the white undercoat for the light colour range or grey wood primer for all other colours. Can be used on previously painted wood to cover bold colours and dark marks.

Ensure the wood surface to be painted with Ronseal Primer and Undercoat is clean, dry and free from dirt, dust and grease. Put down dust sheets to cover anything that you don't want to get paint on.

Bare Wood

  1. Lightly sand wood with a 120 grit sandpaper, sanding in the direction of the woodgrain
  2. Remove any wood dust, and wipe the wood surface with white spirit
  3. Fill any gaps or splits in the wood with a suitable wood filler, removing any excess

Previously Painted Wood

  1. If your old paint is in good condition, just give it a light sand to help the Primer and Undercoat stick
  2. If it's flaking or cracked it must be sanded back to bare wood
  3. Use 120 grit sandpaper and sand in the direction of the woodgrain
  4. Remove any wood dust, and wipe the wood surface with white spirit
  5. Fill any gaps or splits in the wood with a suitable wood filler, removing any excess

Always do a small test area before starting any project and follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times. Stir contents of tin thoroughly before and during application.

  1. Apply two coats of Ronseal Primer evenly using a good quality synthetic brush, finishing in the direction of the grain
  2. When using more than one tin, intermix before use to ensure an even colour
  3. Apply a second coat after four hours
  4. After the second coat, give it a light sand with a 240 grit sandpaper

I would recommend you use thisproduct as a prep for exterior wood painting by Robert O;Connor

I was unsure about undercoating the exterior wood as I am pretty clueless when it comes to DIY, but I took the advice of Wood Finish Direct and went ahead and did it. Two coats of grey undercoat? I was a bit weary about how it wood look after I had painted over it. No need to worry it looks superb, and I am glad I did

Goes on a treat by Ros Hodges

I desperately needed this undercoat to finish the high barge boards before the weather turned and had tried to get it at three local suppliers (not that local actually as we are in the middle of the country) so it was great to add it to my specialist order and have it arrive with no more hassle.
