Manns Classic Wood Dye is manufactured from the finest ingredients and quality pigments which in turn enhances the overall grain structure of the wood. Lesser quality wood dyes can produce a washed out or patchy effect.

Ensure that wooden surfaces to be dyed are clean, dry and free from surface dirt, debris and other surface contaminates. New, bare wood or wood that has been freshly sanded or stripped can be wiped down with White Spirit which is excellent for degreasing the wood.

  1. Sand along the wood grain to no lower than a 150 grit ensuring a consistent finish. Failure to do so will result in a patchy appearance.
  2. Wipe down the surface with a slightly damp cloth or vacuum to remove all traces of sanding dust
  3. Mask off and protect any surfaces and areas not to be dyed

Always do a test area before starting any project to test product suitability, colour and final finish. The final colour finish will only be seen when overcoated with a wood oil or varnish. Therefore the test area will need to be finished with a top coat to assess the final colour finish.

Manns Classic Wood Dyes are very easy to apply and have a good open time which helps to keep a wet edge, allowing time for tidying up runs and puddles.

  1. Mix the wood dye thouroughly before and periodically during use.
  2. Apply thinly in the direction of the wood grain and wipe off any excess dye with a clean lint free cloth
  3. Apply using a synthetic bristle brush, sponge, foam applicator or spray gun
  4. A foam sponge is highly recommended when working on large flat pieces as any heavily dyed areas can be soaked up by the sponge as you work. Similarly by applying a little more pressure, more of the wood dye can be released to save time returning to the container for more
  5. De-nib (lightly sand) using a fine finishing pad before applying the top coat or a 2nd coat of dye if desired. Take care to remove all traces of sanding dust with a vacuum cleaner before sealing with a suitable top coat.

Manns Classic Wood Dye must be sealed with a top coat system such as a wood varnish, wood oil or wood wax. If using a water-based top coat, apply 1st coat thinly, passing over surface with few strokes to avoid any lifting of the dye. Apply 2nd coat as normal (de-nib between coats).

Prompt delivery, fair price, exactly the product I needed by Peter Senior

This is a wood dye suitable for use on children's toys. If the web based instructions are followed it works well, exactly as described. I used it to renovate the hat and tail of a ride on wooden elephant for a toddler. After two coats it dried a brilliant colour red, just right. Because the rest of the toy was being varnished I varnished over the dye too but that is not essential. I am happy to recommend this product.

Faultless by Rodney Beasley

When added to water this dye is perfect for bringing out the gran before applications of other colours. Needs to be used diluted because as a neat colour it will be too much for the wood. However, for a deep black/Ebony finish, this does the job, perfectly.

Only used as a tester by Jill McCombie

I bought this product to experiment with making the white wood dye slightly more grey; in the end I just used the white as it was. Not able to really give a proper review but the service from this company is great.

Easy for airbrushing by Mr Craig Robson

The black dye is inklike in consistency, and lump-free, making it excellent for airbrushing, or manual brush applications.
